2001 santa fe reving problem!!

01/09/2009 4:57 PM

hi falks it seems that i need your help again with my 2001 santa fe . the car is having a tough time going over 80 km/h . i tried reving it at park and it wouldn't rev past 3000 rpm , i opened up the air filter and sprayed the air switch thinking it wasn't working properly but that didn't help . there are no codes or engine light on. i checked all the air hoses and they look o.k . so as you can see i've more or less run out of options, and would like anyone with some knowledge on this problem to please give me some suggestions.

thank you all

Hundai and Kia have rev limiters. Perhaps a sensor?

Check out the vacuum lines on the intake side sounds like a partial blockage or possibly a sensor that is not functioning correctly.

Something else that may be the problem: check the throttle body, make sure the butterfly is opening all the way.

With the motor turned off look down the throat of the throttle body and have someone press on the throttle pedal. Could be the cable has stretched or come out of adjustment.

Good luck

One comment on revving the car in park - most ECU's are calibrated to prevent the engine from revving about 3000 or 4000 rpm in neutral / park. I know that does not help with your real problem, but I wanted to convey that such behaviour is normal.

In gear, they should rev to redline (i.e. 6000 rpm + for most 4-valve designs).

You should be able to go to redline in 1st gear on a level road.

seems to be pointing at the throttle cable as the possible problem.

I don't know why you would want to rev over 3000 with no load on the engine. If you try hard enough, and find a way to go higher in neutral, your next question may be How do I stop my engine from making all that banging noise?

Does your car rev to over 5000 rpm in first gear? Anything that restricts air flow will limit rpm. That can be intake, or exhaust. Revving in neutral that high is not healthy for engines. Be carefull. test in gear, with some load on it. Good luck.

THANKS BOB the answer is no , it doesn't rev higher in any gear , on the road and the car in drive, it does not go over max 3200 rpm and it does fell like the engine is struggling .especially uphill , i sort of guessed it might be some kind of obstruction on the exhaust system but i don't know where to start looking without having to take the manifold apart or at least the muffler, do you have any easier ways of checking for obstructions in the exhaust?

thank you buddy

Re: 2001 Santa Fe revving problem!!

Absolutely.

Get a cutting torch and cut all that crap out.

Or find the O2 sensor, and remove it. If the car runs better, you have an exhaust restriction. If you have access to a vacuum gauge, you can connect it to the intake manifold. When you reach enough engine rpm to restrict the exhaust flow, the vacuum will drop to 0, then start to build pressure. Again if this is easier, it will tell you the exhaust is restricted.

The most common restriction is the catalytic converter. Try to remove everything behind the cat. If no change, remove the cat from whatever is directly in front of it. That should provide a large increase in power, and noise. Good luck.

thanks again bob, this damn car has 3 catalitics 2 vertical coming of the manifold and 1 under the car i guess it would be hard to determine which one its the bad one though, not too long ago i replaced an oxygen sensor , could that cause a problem like that ?

thanks

More likely a fuel filter.

Wouw! They's a lot of cats, are they welded on or have a bolted flange?

The filter is located inside the fuel tank and there should be a strainer in the pump also.

You might get lucky and see one that starts to smoke. Don't get your hopes too high on that though. Which would be the easiest to remove? I would try to separate the one under the car and rerun it. If that does not work. loosen one exhaust manifold from one of the heads. The easy side. Wedge a screwdriver into the gap between the manifold, and head. If you have luck like mine, you can now do the other head to manifold bolts and try again.

The O2 sensor could be the cause, or the result. If the sensor was bad, it could over compensate, and the mix would be too rich and soot up a cat.

OR

The system could have been too rich, sooting up the O2 sensor, making it bad.

When the O2 goes bad, and there is a sooty result, It can help to Run some water through a small vacuum hose while at high idle. This will help clean out the soot. (so I've been told)

...and while doing so, please remember to mention that the under car needs to be protected from possible flames out of the exhaust!

I think its the cat, probably blocked from burning too much oil from a worn engine or valve train (what is the oil consumption?) if its more than a pint per 1000 miles, that is the real problem....

Then two of the other tips from others might fit the bill, blocked fuel filter, bad firmware in the computer.....

It is either a plugged up catalytic converter

Plugged up fuel filter or

The computer (ecu) needs to be reset. There is no engine code for computer malfunction. My Sonata did the same thing, they changed the fuel filter and reprogrammed the ECU. It seems that as you drive the ECU learns and changes over time. After a long time it begins to forget some of the older things. Mine would idle slightly high and accelerate like a bicycle to about 3400 rpm. After the computer was reloaded with the original information, it was back to running well.

Ha! There is a test code that can be entered into the ecu so after the predetermined period has passed the ecu will revert to an abysmal state; not unlike the flu. This I suppose is to influence you to return for service like a junkie.

A possibility that I have not seen addressed: When you changed the Oxygen sensor, did you disconnect the battery? If not, then disconnect the battery for at least a half hour and let the lithium battery that is in the computer drain down.

When the half hour is done replace the cable and drive the vehicle for at least an hour, up and down hills, high speed and stop and go traffic. What this does is reteach the engine computer what the engine sensor parameters are, Oxygen sensors are each one unique in their exact range. It sounds like your engine computer is operating in the default setting which limits it's speed at between three and four thousand RPMs.

Limnes, It does not matter which battery terminal cable you remove. Just so that the battery is disconnected from the vehicle for half an hour, this causes the battery built in to the computer to drop low enough to lose it's codes. Five or ten minutes are insufficient.

Slightly wrong as for various safety reasons, you should always disconnect the "-" first on negative ground vehicles....its only a small thing, but can be important.

When "jumping" another vehicle, you should first connect the "+" poles of both car batteries, followed by frame on the non-running vehicle to frame on the running, in that order.....

Always disconnect in the reverse order....

You have hit upon a good thought. The only thing I would like to add is the process for clearing a computer memory. Some need to be cleared by a reader. Please see below.

Re: Emissions Test Failure - '98 Chevy PU 12/16/2008 9:35 AM
I got the truck passed. I talked to a GM dealer mechanic about it and here is what he told me and what I did. He said that unhooking the battery did not always clear the codes out and I needed to do that with a code reader , he said I bet it will pass if you try that. I went to O Reilly auto parts store . They gave me a 30 second course on how to use it and I did and cleared the code and drove it through a drive cycle and took it in yesterday. It passed with flying colors. Explain that one to me. I have read a dozen places and heard it from a dozen people, including the "inspector" that unhooking your battery for five minutes did the job but this one mechanic told me to not rely on that and it turns out he was right. Pretty weird but very true. thought I'd post this up and maybe it will help someone else with an unsolvable emissions test problem. Thanks for all the replies. Jack
