Pigging and Gauging

01/12/2009 12:04 AM

I would like to ask if there's a way to calculate the distance travelled by pig from the pressure gauge readings on the launcher to ensure that the pig is travelling at the specifed speed as per the specification

OR

Other way we can keep a note of time for same of say 1 m after the stabilization of the pig run and locate the pig by pig tracker/ locater and measure the distance in chainage keep on multiplying the same for a given distance travelled and pressure indicated.

The later assumed process surely would not help the Sub-Sea Pipeline or it may if you measure it on the risers!!!

I would suggest looking at the flow meter reading rather than the pressure readings as assuming minimal slippage, the volume of water / fluid moved through the pipe will propel the pig.. do not however take your eyes off the pressure guage as this will indicate blockage.

"Guest"(#1) posted correctly.

The pressure, alone, won't give you anything close to what you seek. However, if you watch the flow rate closely, while keeping an eye on the clock, you can know with pretty fair precision just where your Pig might be...(*).

* That is, assuming that there isn't TOO much water by-passing the pig during the push...

Here's a link to a spreadsheet that I'd used many years ago:

... a few minor upgrades have been added-to the coding (using V.B.) and incorporated into an executable for the purpose...

You're welcome to "Have-at-it", yourself...

Best Regards ~
