Looking for some simple & inexpensive RFID software solution for tracking items in/out of inventory. Already have the hardware for 925Mhz. Any suggestions?

I have an Alien Developers kit that came with the reader, 2 linear antennas and developers software, enough to see how well your product will "read", placement of antennas, communication. I also purchased 2 circular antennas. I'm wanting to read plastic cores, 6-15" diameter, .75" thick that are stored in plastic tubs. The setup works well in reading all the cores as they pass thru an 8 foot access portal. With the Alien Squiggle tags and the UHF frequency proximity isn't a problem.
The programming with the Alien reader allows me to gather and send data associated with the cores to a network address or directly to a serial port.
I'd like to see some software that allows me to collect this information, assess what has passed thru the portal (I can tell whether it's going in or out) and make a determination what's been added or removed. Simple check in / out? Is this something I can do with a spreadsheet. Can OLE be used? I'm vaguely familiar with that. I have several outside groups of people more than willing to develop this for me, for an appropriate fee. I was hoping I might find a simpler solution and accomplish in-house, at least to get management convinced this is something we should be looking at closer. Thanks

Personally I would go for in house development because I am a DEY (Do Everything Myself). I bought myself a Mastering Delphi 5 - (Marco Cantu) and downloaded Essential Delphi. There is even a stock control sample in MD5. Older Delphi compilers with RAD are also available for free.
It is not rocket science but the decision may however also backfire on you.
My suggestion would be to download a compiler and instructions and play with the samples to find your own capability level.
Delphi can handle OLE structures.

Checked out the Trackerpoint prior to this posting and they're not set up for my hardware, though they offered to do that. The cost for their RFLink and RFView software would be about $5000. More than I want to spend at this time just to prove a concept.
We do currently utilize barcode to identify and track our finished product. However, I am hoping to do a standalone/separate situation without tying into that database for various (technical) reasons.
I think I can make Access or a program called FileMaker Pro work if I can figure out how to have the data sent to me by the reader dumped into a useable file; text or XML maybe? Then I might create a Dynamic link? or something converted to SQL which filemaker uses? The search continues.......
I'm on a learning curve here so excuse me if my ignorance is showing..........

I understand your reluctance in paying that much out just to try something.
With filemaker.pro, perhaps they may have a file converter either in with it or on their site? I am not familiar with it so can't help, though I will look for a file converter for you. I am not really sure what the file name it sends in? And you want it turned into sql?
Don't worry about your ignorance, if that is what it is, no one can know the details of all the software out there?
Take care...............
