Formula for Journal Bearing Clearance

01/18/2009 2:48 PM

Is there any formula can be used to obtain bearing clearance as function of shaft dia.,speed, operating temperature, etc.

for gas turbine, the bearing clearance is 0.016 inch for 8 inch shaft diameter. what is the equation been used to calculate this value.

Regards

As my journeyman on the "spoorweg" used to say, A thou per inch and one for the journal, 2 if it's little.

He also kept telling me that there were 3 ways to do things, the right way, the wrong way and the railway. The newly installed pyrometers for measuring the babbit temperature prior to pouring the bearings were ignored, he used wooden slivers from tomato boxes, dipped them into the molten metal and if the edges just charred black he would pour. What an artisan he was.

I have sent you an email with some more information taken from the Tribology Handbook - Michael J Neale - recommended reading.

The journal bearing clearances depend on the factore you mantiond along with a few others like journal length, load, vibration, oil characteristics, flow rate etc,

For my ex-organisation, dedicated (in house) softwares are there (I know the existence but being used and developed by our design group so can not be of help there)

However in net one link may be of help - you can buy it if you need-
