Air Cylinder

01/19/2009 2:32 PM

If I am using a pneumatic actuator to actuate a gripper to grip inside a pipe, is the force exherted by my pneumatic cylinder(F) independent of the surface area (contact area) of the gripper (A)?
thanks!

Yep independant.

Friction force = the normal force x coeff friction between you gripper and pipe. Unless you've got teeth that bite into the pipe or something.

Hi Vscid

Yep, the force at gripper A is dependant on the force supplied by the cylinder ± any mechanical advantage/disadvantage in the lever mechanism involved within the gripper and the angle of the applied force.

The force applied by the cylinder (in turn) is dependant on the air pressure differential applied to the piston of the cylinder (or it's rod or it's annulus area < piston minus rod>).

Don't know if this helps as there are a lot of variations possible here!
