Power transformer is a transformer that steps up or step down voltage for transmitting electrical energy for the utility. They are rated with kVA capacity and voltage transformation ratio ( Example Transformer rating : 500 kVA , 11/0.43 kV )

Other Transformers are like :-

Current transformer( CT )

Potential transformer (PT)

Control transformer

Impedance Matching transformer

RF Transformer, IF transformer, AF transformer, HF / MF Water cooled Isolation transformers etc.

Is also a transformer that the ratio is one to one (expl. 480V to 480V=1)

Hello, Atleast in India the term power transformer is used for those where in both primery and secondary voltages are above 1100V such as 66/11 kV, 132/22 kV, 230/66 kV etc. And in case of transformers having primery in high voltage and secondary winding having low voltage is termed as Distribution Transformers like what Mr VI Abraham has given for 11/0.433 kV, 500 KVA. Power transformers are generally found in grid outdoor switch-yards and used for transferring bulk power.

The term Power Transformer in the United States means anything that transforms power. My laptop has a transformer that convers 110VAC to whatever the DC my computer needs, (Sorry but I'm too lazy to turn that little black box over and read the label)

Dear Sir,

Only the Voltage Level is denoted in KVA/MVA. The transformer rating shall be in MVA/kVA.

Best Regards,

N.Suresh

Dear Suresh,

When we use a transformer for welding set / Transformer for Battery charging , it is power transformer only even though it is 440 volts / less than 100 volts . But normally in common use power engineers may consider large medium and high voltage distribution transformers as power transformers. But all other power utility transformers are also technically categorised as power transformer.

Simply denoting a power transformer is used to transmit or transform power from usually one Voltage to another. In certain cases of course, the Voltages are same on either side (for Isolation transformers)

It is usually conencted across line on the inlet side, and on the outlet side you draw a useful power (KW)

Voltage transformer is also across line (parallel) but the power drawn is negligible (since i≈0)

The current transformer is series connected and here also power is almost zer (theoritically zero since here V≈0 )

transformer is static machine there is no moving part ,the rating of trf depends on votage and current
