Small-Radius Balanced Wheels for Skate Sharpening

01/29/2009 10:51 AM

Am anxious to source a number of 3 inch radius wheels to use on the Broadbent Incredible edger skate sharpener. Can send samples of wheels currently used. These would be better balanced as machine is sensitive to imbalanced wheels and give far superior performance with wheels that are running true. Look forward to hearing from companies who can supply - preferably in the UK. prepared to shop abroad if required. There are quite a few of these machines in use.

Hi Thanks for your interest. I am sure that I have tried these companies through dealers/agents and have rejected 2 sets of wheels so far. Because of imbalance problems have been unable to get a sweet cut on the skate blade.

Just curious, you did perform a method of truing the wheels prior to attempt sharpen the blades? It is a necessary step in order that the wheels may conform to your machines characteristics and this also balances the wheel too.

Hello I have a little device to show high spots. I use compensating washers to attempt balance which works acceptably well most times. I also have to trim/dress the wheels when put on the machine. You can see the machine I use at www.iceskateology.com Regards Ian

Okay you're saying dressing the wheel doesn't eliminate an unbalanced wheel condition?

In my experience improper storage has led to wheels becoming unbalanced due to exposure to humidity, water, oils or orientation.

Suggest focus search upon "Vitrified Tool Room" wheels as they most closely fit your needs.

Hi,

usually there are these problems with accurate grinding wheels:

machine

unbalance of drive and bad bearings and bad and excentric matching surface,

too large clearance of shaft to inner diameter of wheel,

non perpendicular flanges causing tilt of wheel,

outside diameter excentricity to be removed by dressing thereby introducing change of unbalance,

dressing location different to grinding location: synchronous spindle runout will be on the grinding surface.

I got some very fine wheels from this company: http://www.lapport.de/ (they speak English).

Hello I will contact this company and see how we get on. many thanks for your interest. Although not an engineer I know when a stone is cutting sweetly as you can feel it when working on a blade.

This compay's wheels have been the best so far. The initial trial batch run better than most without much rebalancing. Have ordered a quantity of fine grit which I use the most . Waiting for delivery at the moment. Thanks for putting me in touch with them. It is a shame we cannot seem to get these made in the UK.

Hello thanks for the interest. Usually hockey machines use 7 - 8 inch diameter wheels. I use 3 inch. Only few manufacturers will supply balanced wheels. Trying to source these

Blademaster stocks 3" wheels for their figure machine. There 8" wheels are very good.

Have tried 3 inch blademaster wheels, which have been not bad on my machines. They would certainly do in an emergency but they have been expensive to purchase in the UK and are only available in fine grit.

Wissota only do wheels for their own machines and these are bigger than 3 inch diameter.
