U.S.A., 1200 foot underground cable for 200 amp single phase 110/220?

01/31/2009 5:35 AM

How do I size a 1200 foot underground cable for 200 amp single phase 110/220 to meet IRBC? Also aluminum or copper?

It depends on what you load is.

For a 100 amp load you would need 500 kcm to maintain a 3.5% VD.

For 200 amp load you would need 1000 kcm.

You need to transform the voltage to 480 volt or even 600 volts and you would then need #1 CU for a 100 amp load and 3/0 CU for a 200 amp load.

Need more information---

What is acceptable voltage drop at full load current?

Will you be using direct burial or contained within conduit? If conduit what type, metallic or plastic?

Copper or aluminum is your choice, Copper= higher price but smaller size Aluminum= lower cost but larger size

Unfortunately this type of question has to have more parameters specified or you could end up with nearly a zillion different options.

The second part is easy

Copper you carry, aluminium you bend! See haow this goes, Ky.

I can't for the life of me figure out why you would want to run 1200 feet of cable to serve a 200 amp single phase load at 110/220 and then be responsible for this cable for the rest of the time that you are using it. You are looking at a minimum of $3500 to $4000 for trenching, conduit and cable cost. You should also look at installing at least one hand-hole at a minimum so that you can isolate half of the cable run when it faults and it will eventually fail.

Why don't you take the same amount of money and have your local utility run 1200 feet of #2 or 1/0 AL primary to a 25KVA padmount transformer to serve your load. Then you can provide 25 feet or so of conduit and cable and reduce your liability and maintenance to darn near nothing. Some of the utilities will even provide the cable and conduit for you and then you have no liability except for what is on your side of the meter.

My guess is that one cable failure, regardless of the cause, is going to cost you between $500 to a $1000 dollars not counting the aggravation. Call your utility and start negotiating.

Move your transformer 1200 feet closer to your load.... 1200 feet of 120/240 VAC type URD underground triplex , in general should never be installed, URD should be use in ~100 ft lengths, and that is assuming a residential load. A commericial load requires 250 MCM where Residential is generally 4/0-4/0-2/0 URD. Code vary.... but locate your transformer as close to the load center as possible.
