Please refer to API 650 - Welded Steel Tanks for Oil Service

Particularly Appendix A - Optional Design Basis for Small Tanks

(you may also want to refer to NFPA 30 and/or 31 depending on the usuage/location of the tank)

Hi I am a designer for Holt Caterpillar Power Systems Division, and work with all sizes of diesel tanks. There are many considerations in the design of a tank that size, like if it is close to a body of water you should have a tank with a fill cavaty arround the actual tank in case a leak forms in the main tank. Most tanks like this that are located where ambient temp. is between 110 deg F and 40 deg F are made from ASTM A36 Steel and are welded with full penatration welds.

If you need any further assistance my email is henry.halper@gmail.com contact me any time.
