Computer-Controllable and Resettable AC Volt Breakers

02/02/2009 9:34 AM

I need smaller - 10 - 30 ampere breakers that I can reset after they "blow/Snap" via computer control. Whom makes such?

Who has had experieince with such ?

OR

Telemecanique <usual disclaimer> motor overloads can be fitted with a small auxiliary solenoid that will press the reset button when energised. Is there anything else in the catalogue that could be considered?

Telemecanique........................

was bought out (at least in the USA) by Square D some time ago. I doubt that most electrical codes (at least in the USA) would allow for a breaker that can be remotely reset

dr.simm1776; square D makes QO series single pole breakers that can be turned on or off by 24 volt D.C. how ever I don't know if they can be reset if they tripped. perry

I advice solve the problem, teach your staff to troubleshoot and do not teach anyone else to reset a breaker from a distance without knowing the problem.

Apart from the caveat from miketheboilerguy, which I agree with, there is a company called ETA which makes resettable remote controlled breakers.

Another option is to use a contactor and detect the current with an amp probe or shunt as appropriate straight in to the computor which can then give you whatever trip curve you need.

regards

Chas

It could be done with relays, electronic circuits (PLC) and a driver interface, but the concept is both foolish and dangerous. When a fault overload or short opens a manual reset breaker or fuse it is protecting your wiring and other components. You should always find and remove the cause of the overload before resetting. A remote (computer) reset can detect the fault but not troubleshoot or remove the cause.

Guys

THANKS for all the advice.

The project is a test system to verify anti-islanding -

the "tested unit" autmatically clamps the 3Phase input ( a transformer in this case representing a wind generator) as a "braking function" . I need to protect the transformer when this occurs, reset the control input which opens the "braking function" and then the test system needs the 3Phase again = therefore the re-settable breakers via computer control.
