Valve Maintenance and Line Blow

02/03/2009 12:58 PM

What is the safest way to blow out the air lines prior to servicing a valve when it has a regulator or solenoid? I.E...Should these components be protected from the line blow?

Don't worry about the solenoid, but you can definitely destroy the regulator. Total isolation is your best bet. Don't count on the Safety valve:

for isolation. They are sometimes "one way", (I learned that the hard way).

Thanks for the response Brick. The Solenoid... won't get pitted if there is debris in the air lines? If it does get pitted is that a big deal. I have about 30 Solenoids in the system that I was planning on bypassing, but that would save me lots of time if I could blow through them and isolate the air to atmosphere before the actuator or i.e. regulator and positioning device.

I've never had a problem, (for 35 years anyway), blowing out thru a solenoid, butterfly or port valve. Just stay away from the regulator, as if it sees shop air, it WILL be damaged.

Of course, you have a filter before your blower, so any crud in the line will be very fine. Wear a respirator, and eye protection.
