Still Using Visual Basic 6?

02/05/2009 4:58 PM

I like to get a feel for who's still using VB 6 instead of having switched to .Net

The TIOBE site is an up-to-date comparison of languages used in industry today:

http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

EDIT: I just noticed they do not differentiate btween VB6 and VB.NET, sorry. Still a good site though.

Thanks for the head's up. We work in VB6 and .Net. In fact, we're well versed in the entire NET Platform.

I appreciate it.

I'm sticking with 6 for 90% of the stuff I do (though I have both).

JohnDG-

Have you looked into making the conversion to .NET? Has the lack of Microsoft support or speed been any issue for you?

"Has the lack of Microsoft support ... "

No - I haven't really looked into it that far. I have a lot of stuff written using 6 that I can re-use for new customers without too much disturbance. I make extensive use of DDE (which I know is out of favour these days), and I'd be very stuck if it didn't migrate smoothly.

I've produced a bit of DF1 interface software for communication with Rockwell PLCs (saving the Rockwell licence fee for RSLinx for each app) that is very sensitive to changes of environment - if .NET caused any problems, I couldn't afford the time to sort it out.

I wouldn't say my approach is Luddite, but I'm working on "if it ain't broke - don't fix it". I'm working 12 hrs 6/7 at present, but things will calm down in the summer, & I may try some experiments.
