Hi, qone - Disabling items here can cause issues depending on what software you have installed.

Go through the list of EXE files that run on startup.

That should help cut down your startup apps.
Good Luck.

GA coonj for your good advice.

However, some TSR programs can be checked out until verified, by restarting the system to see if any errors were produced. This is only done one program check-out for each restart, ad in general terms the effect is reversible.

However, I wouldn't even follow my own advice here, because:

1. I would prefer to avoid installing something I would have later trouble having it's TSR present in the first place, altogether

2. If it's about stuff I need there but lack enough RAM to host the lot, I would simply increase the volume of RAM available

Good points, but not the whole story, unfortunately.

It's cheap nowadays to add ram to cover all the junk processes that everbody's software wants to run on startup, but this stuff also eats up clock tics on the cpu as it waits interminably in the background for a job.

Why eat up resources constantly for an app that may only be run once a week, or month or even a year?

Turn off stuff like window's indexing service that runs constantly but will really only save you a few milliseconds on those occasions when you use it.

Be judicious and you can save a lot of processor clock tics and use them where you really need them. And, you may even find out that you get an extra year or two of use out of that old cpu when you turn all the crap off.
