Restricting Websites

02/07/2009 9:38 AM

Hi,

Is it possible to create a list of restricted websites, that doesn't involve a program which is installed onto the user. I am admin, and have access to the linksys wireless router. The site for the router is: Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway

Thanks,

Since you reference linksys are we talking about a home network here? The answer depends on environment.

Wellllll...given your equipment you could use a proxy service and lock all your outbound inbound traffic through it - but there is bound to be a fee

I've got a lot of not answer

except you might try here

It's certainly possible to block IP ranges at the router level but you might want to consider using the OS to do this.

If you're using Windows this file already exists, it's called a 'hosts' file and you can freely add/edit it with any text editor e.g. notepad. For more info :

So you just add them to the file?

Hello Bondy111,

Go to start / control panel / internet options / Security / Restricted sites and add sites you want to restrict access to the blocked category.

Thanks,

Would you have to do these changes for each internet browser, and would they apply right across the system?

Also, I was hoping there would be a more techical way, through notepad, making a DOS program, so it would be harder to be located.

BTW scrap the "that doesn't involve a program which is installed onto the user", I think my mind may have wondered. It needs to be installed on my user, but apply changes right across the system.

As stevem suggested, the "hosts" text file is your best bet if you want to control access on a single machine. I would suggest doing this. Using Internet Options only applies to Internet Explorer, so other web browsers will not be restricted.

Using the router to restrict access is an ideal solution for an entire network, and is difficult to disable, as the router is password protected. However, this can be reset by hard-resetting the router (pressing the reset button on the back of the hardware).

Maybe a combination of both is your best bet if you do not want to use additional firewall software.

Instead of over complicating the issue just don't allow the turkey to use your stuff

Of course, there is an easy way to see restricted content by the user - simply look for the cashed google page.

Guys i'm pretty sure you can do this right on the router config page (default ip: 192.168.1.1).

I remember there being a tab which gives you control over blocking websites and or applications. I would check that out before installing software or something else which would take more steps.

Try using Zonealarm firewall with a linksys router. It semi-integrates and provides broader control and protection than the hardware firewall alone.

My linksys router (almost 2 years old) supports this functionality. I don't know if newer versions do as I haven't kept up with the newer linksys products.

Zone-alarm firewall will perform this function itself by using the malicious site blocking tool; if you don't want it block it.

Yes, this can be accomplished within the linksys setup software. Also you may designate when and for how long specific computers can access the web.
