Fail-Safe Configuration for Fire and Gas System

02/11/2009 6:14 AM

we have separate fire &gas system in large scale plant

Is that standard that the Fire & Gas system (F&G system) shall be generally designed to operate on a non Fail-Safe configuration i.e. executive actions shall not be activated on failure of loops and/or systems. and why?

Please elobrate more. You are not making sense. i.e. executive actions shall not be activated on failure of loops and/or systems. What do you mean actually?

F&G systems have I/O likes MCPs, Detectors etc. If wired in a fail safe mode, trips (executive actions) may occur, even in case of failure of fuses, cable cuts etc, which as such is not desired.

Hence since F&G is not a critical system from plant operations, fail safe mode is generally not done.

However to detect, cable faults, fuse blowing out etc, system is configured with line monitoring facility, which will provide the desired annunciation in case of cable faults / circuit openness for one or the other reason.

If you go into further details of line monitoring features provided by various system suppliers, then more info. is available.

The same is applicable for Blow-down valve SOVs.

What are the most commonly used line monitoring schemes?
