How to Select a Gearbox for a Servo Motor

02/18/2009 11:46 PM

I am selecting gear box for servomotor ,

Nominal input speed to gear box 4000 RPM . Nomianl output speed from servomotor is 3000 RPM , will this suitable

please guide me to select the gear box for servomotor

Any other manufacturing company making servomotor & gear box attached ,

Sure; why not? As long as the servo motor's speed is less than that which the gearbox is rated, you'll be fine.

Other considerations are torque/power inputs/outputs.

Check if the Torque and speed characteristics of the gear box match with the servo motor. Otherwise servo will go on tripping or gera box will get heated.

Very important, check the "back slash" of the gear box. This is the angle you have to turn the input shaft to make beginning turn the output shaft if you change the rotating direction of the input shaft.

Mostly a servo motor is used for exact following a motion that is given in a form of speed and rotating direction.

If the back slash is too big, then you will have a big "death" time in your control system. It takes a "long" time between the start signal and the starting of the movement.

This gives you an application with a lot of "overshoot".

Your motion will never follow the exact input demand.

A back slash as low as 10 or 5 minutes is possible

( 1 minute is 1 / 21600 part of a circle)

"Nominal input speed to gear box 4000 RPM . Nomianl output speed from servomotor is 3000 RPM , will this suitable"

Not necessarily. Speed is only one aspect you have to consider. As already mentioned, you have to look at torque and backlash as well. What is often overlooked with servos is the need for "inertia matching". All 4 of these are equally important, since any one of them can cause problems or a failure.

"please guide me to select the gear box for servomotor"

you would need to provide more info. load and acceleration, diameter of outout shaft or pitch diameter of gear attached to output, is the load moving linear or non linear, internial inertia or gearbox, etc.

you may find that your servo motor is either oversized or insufficient. changes to the gearbox will directly affect the servo motor requirements.

I would recommend you look at complete servo systems as a single unit. Quite a few companies make these units complete with encoders, tachs and and matched amps for a variety of apps. Costs aren't usually that bad when you consider all the issues that can arise. A lot of remote control or robotics companies carry actuators, etc. Industrial control companies carry some of the higher end units rated for continuous duty. Don't forget CNC for some very high accuracy devices.

Unless there is a very high cost implication it is better to go with a single assembly for motor, gear bos and servo motor. Otherwise should have complete details of torque , amperage and speed characteristics of all the three components. No need to mention that how importnat is the synchjronistaion which is mostly ignored in selection.
