If that's what yours is doing then I would say yes. Leave it blank, hit enter and log in.

Could it be that your "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" is checked"?

Look into Start → Control Panel → Display → "Screen Saver" Tab → "Power" button → "Advanced" tab under Power Option Properties

Sorry, maybe I was unclear. I want it so that when you turn the pc on, there is no need to go to the welcome screen, without a password, it just logs straight on, but when resuming from sleep, I want it to prompt for a password. Any ideas?

Hi Bondy111,

You will need to autologin to a username, which is easy. if you are not comfortable with editing the registry entries, search for a download utility to do this, otherwise check out following;

http://www.videoproductions.com.au/html/autologon.html

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231 or

As mentioned in the other post, just tick the check box under screen saver for your display properties.

Cheers,

Trevor.

Right Click on the desktop (blank screen with nothing up). Select properties in the pop-up menu. Select screen saver. Select one - blank screen is a good one - check "On resume, password protect". Change "Wait:" to an appropriate short time.

Hi Bondy,

Can I add a little variation to your question which may be a similar solution for us.

As background, we have a Scada logging application running 24/7 on a PC (XP) attached to a server network. When Bill Gates occasionally says your Windows needs updating, it automatically does this, shuts down and does an auto restart, waiting for a human to Ctl-Alt-Del to log on and start the Scada application. Until a human does this, it just waits for Ctl-Alt-Del. I know we can disable auto update but this sometimes is inconvenient.

Is this a similar sequence to your needs?

Yes, it is similar, but it is just more to save time, so the pc can boot up and be ready for you, whilst you go to do something, like turning it on, going for a cup of coffee, and returning to it all being ready to go.

or 2 cups of coffee sometimes,

these may be useful after the logon sequence when you are up and running to automate mouse movements for many step processes to save time. We have used it where an operator can be provided with a simple icon to restart a process without having to key each particular step. But if I learn of an auto startup wizard, will pass it on.

One thought comes to mind - what is the purpose to only password protect "sleep"? What would stop someone from coming by, restarting the computer, and bypassing any password?

TweakUI in XP Powertoys lets you set to auto-logon, I use this because we all have to log on to our server but my PC also acts as the print server in our office. Without auto-logon everyone would have to wait for me to turn up before they could print anything.

In 'Control Panel, Power options, Advanced' you can set XP to ask for a password when resuming from hibernation.

As an option, you can also set a screen saver so that a password is required when exiting.
