CPUs

02/21/2009 6:09 PM

Hi, I have a Intel Celeron Williamette-128, and was wanting to upgrade, but im not sure of compatability, I was thinking of a Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz Socket 478 CPU SL6VU. Would this be compatible, or is there a more compatible one? Do you need to purchase a new heatsink along with it, or can the existing one be used? my mobo is a micro star international SiS 650+962, thats all the info HWINFO32 gives me, sorry

Hello Bondy,

Give it up, any substantive upgrade begins with and LGA775 socket, sorry about that reality check and all but really stop kicking the can and step off that Lily pad.

Yes it would work but you'd not gain substantively.

Before you leap compare the voltages.

There is indication you may use a particular LGA775 on that board.

I got to go to church now.

Unfortunately the MSI site lists that chip set combination as an entire family of boards, so I cannot answer definitively, but it looks like while you could possibly overclock, the limitation is still going to be that 400Hz Front Side Bus.

That said I like MSI products, and try not to frisbee them any sooner than I have to either.

You might be better searching the tech sites like Tom's.

I tried overclocking the CPU that's currently in it, it was at 10, and now is at 24, but the temperature darts between 15 and 70 degrees C, is that good or bad. I tried torture test on Prime95, and there was no errors and no warnings.

Hello Bondy,

How are you?

You sound like you have done some research on this topic already? So please forgive any duplication. For a start I cannot give detailed info' as I do not know the details of very recent CPU. But what I would say is go through the paperwork you got with your Mobo and it will tell you what is relevant to fit on it. As you know different CPUs have a different number and or arrangement of pins so you can only get a CPU that it the same? Sorry for saying the obvious OK. If you can tell me what Mobo you have I can check it out, OK?

Take care and good luck with the changes you are making with your computer!

My mobo is MSI MS-6724 Apparently it will take Pentium 4 Northwood FSB400. Does anyone know where to get one of them with a 512kb cache?

Hello Bondy,

How are you?.......................I am posting info but you will need to do the final check to see if what is available will fit the mobo, OK?

http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=27433

http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=581

These are from Intel UK as far as I can see.

Good luck my friend, it seems you are in the same situation as me where everything is failing because of age? Including me!

Take care

Re: CPUs

You can up your CPU and add all the RAM it can hold but the 400MHz bus is your limitation. If it helps think of it as a matched motor and pump. you can increase the motors size but the gain by the pump will be very small. A 64 bit processor is limited by the 32bit bus. (not that 95% of the people on computers need a 64 bit processor) M$ is the resource hog not the applications.

Memory will make more room if there is a space bottle neck but how fast your bus talks is the real determination of system speed.

I don't know your resources there but you can find information here on what they should cost.

A new faster Motherboard (Mobo) is under 50 US and the memory is even less.

Heat kills electronics. If you must get a 9 inch house fan and point it at the vents of your case.

Brad

Aww, moving the fan would disrupt all the junk around it. it never exceeds 70 degrees on the CPU
