Something is unloading the process/driver/function.

Careful study of exactly what conditions produce this should yield an answer, but clearly some process that uses the USB is not only disconnecting itself, but shutting down the USB when you exit.

Methodically use your desktop noting what applications you have open, closing them and observing whether the USB has shut down.

can you describe your process of "restarting" your desktop? is it:

1. plug in USB... no response from PC

2. refresh desktop... USB lights up.

is that it?

Good morning,

USB 1.0 or above?

Is the USB component plugged into the PC or on an extension port? Is the port powered with an external AC adapter?

When you remove a USB component, do you just unplug it or do you use the little Windows USB-remove icon to turn it off first?

We really need to know (as Andy says) more details like these. Having said that, I would like to note that I have a memory card reader installed in my PC case and have learned that if I use the USB-remove icon (I don't know the official name) this will not only allow me to remove my memory card from the reader, as an added bonus (that's what such things are called in Windows-speak) it will deactivate my USB functions and I have to reboot the PC (shut down and start back up) to get it back. Someday, in my spare time I'll sit down and puzzle it out but for now it's more like having an old, comfortable car that has a few wee quirks.....

Regards, everyone, have a great week!

Logan

Hello sathieshgnanam:

Good advice from LL there.

You could also try the System Configuration Utility, more commonly know as safe mode perhaps? Go to:

Start > run > type msconfig then ok. This brings the utility up. From here you can change and or check everything, though it will take a little time.

Click Selective Startup and until all but one of the 'Radio' buttons below. This will give some idea of what level you are looking at. IE: before anything much starts, or does it only happen when all the radio buttons are checked, which mean all systems are working before the USB is turned of?

It is or can be a frustrating thing to try to track down, but, as LL says, try the desktop approach first. Getting into the Configuration Utility can take a long time to track things down and you also have to note what systems come on as you change the choices. Good luck anyway. You can always get back to us OK?

Take care.........................
