What make/model/power?

You may be able to get fuel consumption from the manufacturer.

For example:

aarkashan We could make this real simple, top off the tank and run with your normal load for say 15 minutes and shut down. Now top off the tank again measuring the amount it takes and multiply by 4 to equal 1 hour of run time. If the tank is empty pour in a known amount (pint, liter, quart ) now start and time how long it runs, now divide time into amount of fuel to find amount per minute, now multiply by 60 to get your answer. I hope this explains it as simple as you ask it. Good Day. J.Conway

Dear all,

If we can generate units from generator ,i.e.---x.

The fuel consume during the generate x units is 160ltrs.

Then average is ===x/160==units/Ltrs.

The cost of diesel 160xrate==total amount

The cost of per unit generated is --Total amount/Generated units.

Use 0.335 pounds of fuel per horse power per hour. Google conversions for kW to HP, (kVA x 0.8), and weight of diesel per liter, etc. Sorry I don't have the SI units memorised and it's late at night where I am and I'm too lazy to convert now....

Cheers

Hi PetroPower,

I may be being pedantic...........but.........could we please use the correct units for

SFC (Specific Fuel Consumption)........lbs/b.h.p hour.......not per hour

or........kg/kWh l/kWh

0.335lbs = 0.152kgs

HCR (Hourly Consumption rate) = SFC x Eng. kW (kg/h) if you divide by density of the fuel (kg/m3 x 1 000 l/m3) ............that will give you l/h

You are right, in fact it is "brake specific fuel consumption" (BSFC) to be matching ISO terms and industry standards and should be in grams/kWhr. But as the query came from a layman seeking simple advice I like to give simple answers that are easy to understand and not glorify my experience as a diesel engine power consultant for 20+ years. There is enough ego on this site without me adding to it or we will drive away people seeking answers, not judgment. Good catch though. Thanks. In fact heat rate is a very proper way to really get into this but I think it is a bit much for our fellow colleage who just wants to know how much fuel is being burned. Like my GF says, "You are the most simple complex man I know". I think the simple part is a comment as to my smarts and the complex part must have something to do with the 7-8 other personalities I have inside my head.

Thanks for that chief.............we have to have a good laugh.........even it it sometimes is at ourselves.............especially in the times in which we live.

There is too much gloom and doom, in this world today.............it does one good to have a bit of a laugh. It helps to lighten up a bit.

Ballpark figure for the US: 1 gal/hr for each 15 hp. Correct units for the smarter part of the world.

Why haven't we gone metric yet? Why do we complain that other countries don't want our manufactured goods when they are made to totally different standards? WShy am I putting this in this thread?

DIESEL CONSUMPTION IS USUALLY CALCULATED LIKE

AMOUNT OF FUEL REQD PER UNIT GENERATION

LOAD THE GEN WITH OUT ANY VARIATION FOR AN HOUR

FIND OUT UNITS GENERATED & FUEL CONSUMED

SP FUEL CONSUMPTON - UNITS GENERATED/FUEL CONSUMED

E ANANDAN

JUST FOR CALCULATION,

For 1000 KVA, HSD based generator,

it generate 1000 units per hour & consumed 1 ltr diesel to generate 3.31 ( Max.) units. ( This data is for full load only)

What a "D**N STUPID Question!!!"

Missing most of the required information to make it possible to give any sort of answer at all......this is really wasting CR4's time......Brain dead???

You dont need to it is a requirment under ISO BS etc standards that manufacturers must publish fuel consumption fiqures at full 3/4 and 1/2 load for all gensets. just go to the manufacturers web site and get the spec sheet for the model you are looking for. On the bigger sets there are some quite marked diferences

I work at Diesel Power in Oakland Ca. My Detroit Diesel Engine manual lists fuel consumption to be 17.5 hp to the gallon per hour for 2cycle supercharger scavenged engines, and 18 hp to the gallon per hour for 4cycle turbocharged engines. John Deere 4cycle engines have been tested to 18-1/4 hp per gallon an hour. What this means is, that for every 18 or so hp your engines use, you will burn 1 gallon. My 2cycle 6-71 burns 3.16 gals an hour at 8kts cruise, so 3.16 x 1 hour at cruise means that at that rate of throttle my engine is producing right at 55hp. (3.16 gals burned in 1 hour x 17.5hp = 55.3hp used to go 8kts)

Dear Mr. Aarkashan,

Few times same question asked by different members of CR4 and replied at length.

Pl. search in this forum itself you will get the entire postings and you can make use of it.
