UAW on television

02/23/2009 7:50 PM

I have the television on in my shop all day and once in a while something grabs my attention, today it was an autoworker talking to the camera, while sitting in their lunch room. He said : "We're eating at home now. mot going to movies every week, and I pack a lunch". I wonder if we are supposed to feel sorry for them or be happy they get a taste of reality???

Like Morpheus said to Neo: "Welcome to the Real World."

Lee Iacocca once told the UAW: "Every dollar an hour increase in your wages makes a thousand more robots economical."

The look on this guys face told the story, as far as he knew the whole world worked this way, incredible. Then again, their vacations probably consisted of taking the kids to Disney World, or a resort on the gulf coast of Mexico. No real exposure to the rest of his country, or any other country for that matter either. Totally brainwashed by what the union leaders have been telling them for years.

I am not fully familiar with the UAW other than what I hear on the news and such. The wages and rules seem out of line for the skills required. I personally feel that if I had to perform a repetitive task for the rest of my life it would require a substantial reward to keep me on the job.

I have used craft labor in the building trades extensively for many years and have observed some skilled productive individuals that were worth every cent we were paying them. Of course there were a few slugs, seems to me I encountered some of those in management as well.

The only point I would make is the unions were developed by sweat shops and inhumane working conditions. So we need to have a look at how our minds work as well
