Panel-Mounted Indicators on Outdoor Enclosures

02/25/2009 3:59 PM

We have an application where we want to use panel-mount indicators (preferably 120VAC neon) on NEMA 3R enclosures that will be installed outdoors.

So must we use an indicator that is specified as waterproof / resistant or can we just use any common panel mount (threaded with nut type) indicator and add some washers or o-rings to seal up the hole in the enclosure?

If it does have to be waterproof / resistant does anyone have any leads where to find one?

My suggestion would to use weather tight indicators. You can get them at any electrical supply house.

I appreciate the help. However I must be either blind or a dunce because I can't seem to locate one at the electrical supply houses I frequent. Surely I'm just using a wrong search term or something.

I hate to further impose, but would it be possible for you or some other kind reader to provide me a specific link?

try EATON, CUTLER-HAMMER, SQUARE D. You should be able to find them in an online catalogue. Get the part number and take it to your supplier and have them order for you, or buy direct if they will sell that way.

Have used Allen Bradley components for over 20 yrs at industrail sites, including waste treatment areas and many with very corrosive atmospheres. They've performed very well. The Nema 4X, LED type, can be purchased as Full Voltage or with a Transformer. Sample part # for a Red, 120V, LED w/xfmr : 800H-PRH16R

The ingress protection rating of the instrument ("IP55" or whatever) must be no lower than the IP rating of the panel. There are dozend of indicator manufacturers. Simply use the IP rating of the panel, or the specified IP rating, to narrow-down the selection.

Hi there,

It is not so simple. The IP rating of the enclosure might not be correct.

Usually these indicators have an IP rating for the front part (the part exposed to the elements) and a different rating for the back (the part inside the panel)

The minimum IP rating for the panel should be IP65 (IP67 is better). You then need to get indicators with IP65/7 fron rating. You should also make sure of the seal as well as the area classification (i.e hazardous?)

As far as I know NEMA R3 comes in various IP ratings. I also believe that some NEMA R3 panels do not have a sealing gasket.

It would be far better for you to work with IP ratings.

You should use indicators that have an IP rating of at least IP65 for the part that is exposed to the elements. They should come with a sealing gasket. You also need to make sure of your area classifcation.

Regards,

Craig
