Aiwa NSX-V50

02/28/2009 5:04 PM

When I select a disc the unit will move to that disc location, start spinning but then stop, move to the next disc and will keep repeating over and over again, and never actually plays the cd. Has anyone else had this problem with Aiwa mini systems, and does anyone know how to sort it?

Sounds like the system is failing to read/recognize the CD's. Does it eventually give any error indication on the display? I've worked on many CD players that had issues reading a disc. The quickest fix to try is to clean the optical pickup lens. Do this carefully, the lens is mounted much like a speaker cone, with a "voice coil" so to speak, that allows the unit to focus and track. I use a Q-tip with a bit of glass cleaner or alcohol and gently swab the lens, then use the other end of the Q-tip to gently dry the lens. Check the lens very closely to be sure no lint/cotton etc. are left on it, then give it a try with a CD. If it still does not read, there's not much I've found that can be done. The alignment procedure for the CD pickup lasers requires a "test" cd of some kind, and documentation to be sure the proper adjustments are being made. Even if you had those, I think the majority of the problems are caused by the laser diode output falling off. Over time, the output of diode reduces, to the point that the player will no longer read a disc. I have fixed a few of these by replacing the whole pickup assembly, sometimes they can be found for as little as $20, but usually the cost is such that it's not financially feasible to repair the unit. Give the cleaning a try, and see how that goes. Good luck and be gentle .

Sometimes "resetting" the microprocessor in the unit can do wonders. I have a Phillips machine that does not read CDs occasionally. I just pull the mains plug, leave it for an hour, plug in again and all is well....

This procedure fixes many "Glitch" problems, so long as the unit does not have battery backup......if yes, sometimes the battery needs to also be disconnected.......if it "Remembers" the failure all the time......

Yeah, i tried cleaning and re-setting, but the problem has been happening for years, just never bothered to try and fix it. Also, it seems that most aiwa mini systems have the same problem... any ideas on other things to do? the laser assembly is very weird, because instead of putting a cd in the top, it is a 3 cd one, and the laser assembly is raised up and clicks into place.

The laser assembly setup is common for the carousel type changers. The only other suggestion is to find the part number on the laser pickup assembly, and look for replacements. As I said earlier, they can sometimes be found for a reasonable price. If you go that route, be careful with the ribbon/FFC cables and connectors, they can be a bit delicate, and won't stand for much mishandling. Good luck.
