Hot Air Cooling in Sea Dipped Pipe

Dear All,

In an offshore Platform in the Middle East, we need to cool substantial amount of Ambient air (T=48 degC) in order to use it as cooling media for a Rotary Drive. If I want to cool, Hot air in pipe by submerging in Sea, what sort of design constraints we may have to face.

This requirement is for short term use and having Chiller on platform is a constraint for many reason.

Is anyone has such experience in desigining such exchanger.

How about trying an intercooler (as used on many turbo diesel engines). You could either blow ambient air through it with a fan, or if submerged in the ocean would be even more effective. Depends on what volume of air you need, but there is some pretty big machinery out there (earthmovers etc), so it might be possible to source a large enough intercooler. Corrosion in the salt water may be an issue, but if its for short term use this may not matter. Also if it is wholly submerged the corrosion issue would be much less severe.

Just to expand a little on this subject, I am aware of charge air coolers that use sea water for cooling the hot air. I work for a company called Vestas aircoil that manufacture and design large diesel engine charge air coolers typically for ships/vessels. It is fairly common to use sea water as coolant, obviously the charge air cooler will have to be designed for this in terms of meterials of construction etc.

We have tried the following in a lab size plant and it did work fine. All you need to do is blow the hot air through one or several verical pipes into the water and recollect the bubbles into a funnel shaped dome. The direct contact of the air with the sea water will almost immediatly cool the air down to sea water temperature. multiple vents can be used to increase efficiency. and a suction system if higher pressure is needed at the funnel discharge. I suspect that small bubbles would be better as they have a greater surface area to volume ratio and that the best way to create these small bubbles would be a plastic or rubber tube as this would avoid any corrosion problems.

Here in Australia we can get a thing called a "Leaky Hose". It is made of old tyres that have been ground up and reformed to a hose. This is layed around a garden bed and connected to a normal hose. This gives a very even distribution of water without any spray and consequently water loss. This should work well for small bubbles and at a cost of not much for a fair prototype.

How much heat needs to be removed from the "rotary drive"?

What is desired temperature of rotary drive?

How much air do you think you need to cool from 48C?

What temperature do you think you want to cool the air to? 35C? 25C?

What is sea water temp?
