I am just about to finish an Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship at the grand old age of 24. I will have an NVQ3 and a HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and allsorts of other little things from specific training courses.
I put in an application for Uni as I have enjoyed my studies, and have top marks for my HNC. I have been offered places at Uni College of London (MEng Electronic and Electrical), Uni of Manchester (MEng Electronic and Electrical), Uni of Southampton (Only Electronic MEng) and Kings College London (MEng Electronic). All on courses that although they differ slightly, I am equally interested in. I do worry that going Southampton or Kings and only doing electronics and not electrical might be a bad Idea.
How do I go about deciding which university to go to? People keep telling me to go to whichever I most 'like', but like is an awfull word! I see going to university as an investment in my future, just as when I quit my job to be an apprentice. The most important thing for me is to get the most from my time at Uni and to be as an attractive prospect to employers as possible.
I sometimes wonder if I should take the time out to get a degree or just go straight into looking for jobs using the qualifications I have.
If you had the choice, how would you make it? If you are an employer, how would you view an older graduate (I will be 28/29 on completion of my MEng) that has work experience and is a time served apprentice?
Thankyou for your time.
Danny.
