Repair Service Wanted: SCM PWP 5000 Plus

03/05/2009 12:18 AM

Hello All,

Here I go again. I have an SCM PWP 5000 Plus that broke down. I have no idea what ails it. The local SCM "repair person" said it was unrepairable. In other words, he did not want to take the time to trouble shoot it and find out its problem.

Is there anyone out there who likes fiddling with old gear and get it working again?

If so, drop me a line.

Ken

Ken,

Is this a Smith-Corona "personal word processor"? That's what Google came up with when I searched.

I have been doing repair work on nearly any/all electrical/electronic/mechanical devices for a number of years. If you really want to get it fixed for a reasonable rate, and don't mind the shipping costs, I'd be willing to look at for you. Can you detail the exact nature of the failure? Let me know if you are interested in sending it off, I'd be happy to take a look at it. No cost other than shipping if I can't get it going for you.

Hi,

Thanks for responding to my request.

Yes, a "P.W.P" is a Personal Word Processor. This was the top of the line machine when I bought it in 1994. Later, SCM came out with a version that used a mouse, but I thought it was not as versitile as the original 5000 Plus.

Now, would you need the monitor that goes with it?

Thanks Ken,

As far as the monitor goes, that depends on what it is. I have VGA monitors, but I 'm going to guess with is age, it might be an EGA or even CGA, or possibly proprietary interface. Can the machine be used without it? It's been quite some time since I had a monochrome/CGA/EGA monitor sitting around. Now that I think about it, I may be able to borrow one from my workplace, we may still have something like that around. Does the unit have a small display built-in?

What exactly is the problem you are having with the unit? Do you really feel it's worth repairing? If you have files on disk that you want to save, there may be file converters available that would allow you to save in a current format (there was a long-running thread about another word processor a while back see here

At least one poster was volunteering to Email the converter utility that allowed you to convert files saved on the PWP to a more "compatible" format (see post #15). According to the poster, the utility works with your 5000Plus as well.

If you still have reason to get it fixed, fill me in on the monitor details, and exactly what symptoms it's showing, and we'll go from there.

Ken,

According to the Smith-Corona website, the official repair facility for their stuff is "Will Repair Service", here's a link;

LINK

I've already Emailed them about a manual for your unit, I'm guessing it will not be free, but I thought I'd ask. If they do give it to me, it will probably have the information I'd need to have about the monitor. If they do end up just sending it to me (PDF), I'll be sure to get a copy to you.
