My very first post! EVER!

03/05/2009 1:00 AM

I'm not sure how I found this site but it's a real hoot! I see consistency of response from the regular members and total chaos from the majority of posters looking for a free ride. I have been searching for this place for millions of years. Thank you and please feel free to lay waste to anything I propose. Now... what to propose?

The UK postal service is pretty bad, but no letters ever ? That's really something !

It seems somehow appropriate that I should have the pleasure of saying a big "Welcome". Our locations seem so far apart, yet so close. Are you by any chance related to the old Vic ? Vic Reeves lives not far from me, which is utterly useless trivia, but since it's nearly the weekend I'll allow myself, just this once

Collecting methane from waste is a regular discussion topic, and Atlantis is a current one, so you should feel at home. Trust me, it's not a free ride - I've had to purchase several new pairs of pants since joining !

The most common proposal is, "Your what ?!?!

Re: My very first post! EVER!

I've not felt the impetus to post on any forum monopolized by lazy good-for nuttin' "tell me how to do it and don't waste time explaining it to me" types. I have been reading this forum for nearly a week and the level of enjoyment just keeps getting better and better.

Like most, I have ideas and plans, but competition for the mean green (and I don't mean "carbon footprint", but that works too) has always put a bad taste in my mouth. I love the line in the Star Trek film "First Contact" when Picard says to Lily "The pursuit of personal wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives.". My wife and I would give it all away to free all people from misery and want.

The only reason for my presence in this venue is to tweak ideas for personal use and hopefully give a variation on a theme to anyone with a need for ideas. As time goes by I wish to be enlightened and entertained by my experience here.

Thank you for replying, and I am not related to anyone by the name of "Reeves" that I know of. My brother's name is Kris, so you will be easy to remember, either woman or man.

When I post again, I will make it as concise and complete as possible.

Until then, Vic

I like the Picard quote. One day I may scamper away to the hills and utilize some of the fantastic off-grid ideas I've found on CR4. Your 3rd paragraph is a perfect reason for joining - to share knowledge and fun. I look forward to meeting you around the various discussions.

Shouldn't scare people. It is our prerogative.

If you really want to. Join us (get a nice avatar, in fact quite a few you may get from the above mentioned thread.

Then you can go ahead and scare vic

Do you think he is also easily scared ?

I initially thought Giorgia will join us but ... She turned out to be ordinary mortal and left after only 6 posts.

Vic is only 3 now.

(The trick is if you see we are scaring you too much, jump to other thread and start afresh)

Else Enjoy the technology and a handful of addled brained engineers.

Good morning fellow entities (that should cover it). Thanks for the welcome. I have a question regarding protocol: How do I end a thread to stop one discussion so I may focus on what I really want to talk about in another thread? The idea of multitasking is too much to handle!

Sorry to tell you Vic, but you can't stop it ! If you go to "Subscribed discussions" (menu on the right) it will take you to a list of all discussions you are involved in. You can tick boxes to un-subscribe, but that only stops you getting notified on further posts to selected discussions.

Sometimes a particular discussion will get sealed of by Admin, usually if site rules have been broken. Best way to look at it is that any thread, no matter who started it, belongs to all. Information sought and given is public property (well, CR4's technically).

As a general guide (just my observation), a thread will probably have a flurry of interest for a few days, then be largely forgotten after a week or two. Looking at the box marked "Who's online" is the easiest way to see the hottest discussion at any given time.

If this particular birthing has given you pain, it will pass and be history in the blink of an eye. For what it's worth, I think it was nice of you to introduce yourself. Don't forget that you can edit your own profile (if you want to) and detail areas of interest etc. You can also join various member groups and get a flag under your avatar to let others know whay you are into.

As told by kris wrongly (he is rarely right )

This is a nuclear chain reaction. You start it. Stopping is not in your hand.

Only way is like an escaping neutron , just escape and start a new atomic bomb (sorry thread). But can not stop this thread till we decide or the other one(s).

Assuming it is a technical query (like this one, or Giorgias) , keep on checking what is happening on this thread.

You can have any number of threads concurrently running so no problem there.

meanwhile keep on checking other threads active

as Kris pointed out check members on-line

or in the forum in your interest - clic to sort on the last post

Never before in my life have I been called an entity! But considering some of the things I have been called.....

Welcome, Vic!

Threads on CR4 sometimes take on a life of their own, and much like an older child, they insist on having their own way, such as this thread. If you decide to read it, may God have mercy upon your soul, and don't forget to bid your loved ones a fond farewell.

Don't be a stranger, Vic, but then, it is hard to be stranger than most CR4'ers.

There is always a first time/ I have been called so many things while my exploits (by the exploited) but I always take them as the recognition for my work done well .

Vic has overtaken Giorgia (he is 9 now as I see) and that means he has crossed the critical infact stage and he is going to stay in the house forever .

BTW- I always had doubt - do squirrel take bath ? do the have bath tubs ? I always thought the use the bird pans for that purpose

Now since bird pans are by definition bird properties, why does he want to break them ? I have to ask Jeeves or others of pgw family, they are quite in the bird business.

Have you sold the tub yet? I thought of attaching automatic pilot capabilities and a propeller system with a super bilge pump in case it rained. It could be dropped in the Atlantic and be at my place in 6 weeks with favorable winds. I can e-mail cash if required.

Vic

I'm pleased to tell you Vic, you may be in luck.

As long as it's not UK currency, cash sounds good to me. The tub is in self assembly flat-pack form now (for ease of transport), so I think it's do-able. Please visit the bath thread and post your bid. With such a precious item, it's only fair to give the others a chance.

My hidden agend here is to spread responsibility for it. Admin can't hang us all ! Maybe bath should be incorporated, it's taken on a life of it's own anyway. It's also too complex for them to break up like Standard Oil

Having thrown an idea (or even a casual yet defenseless statement out there, you have no more ownership of what these nuts will do with it than the man in the moon.

You are left to abandon it to the wide world and go start another thread - that would be the choice Ask A Question - Start A Discussion over on the right of your screen.

Sort of like Johnny Appleseed, you throw out your ideas, and occasionally someone will say something intelligent in response. Fridays are bad. Fridays the entire groups seems to suffer giddyness.

Welcome aboard! Abandon your last orphan and go plant a few more.

oops, missed you posting that ! If you'd clicked the reply button on #16, I'd have noticed (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it !). Nah, just joshing you a bit - what I mean is that your post replies to the initial opener, rather than Vics request on how to escape. No biggie, but it makes it easier to see who's replying to who etc (I got my viewing set to 'indented', rather than 'chronological'. Swap the 'contents:nested/chrono' tab at the top and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, but it WAS Vic that started the thread - so I considered the two equivalent.

And given the poetry of my response would rather have you comment on that; "like an orphan" C'mon - thats great!

There isn't one. The more posts one mades, an indicator starts clocking up, and one attains levels such as Participant, Power-user and Guru, etc. There's a voting indicator for good answers, and if someone posts something humourous in response to a posting then sometimes the respondent puts it in as an off-topic item.

Some users get very excited about good answer scores. Others don't. It's a funny old world.

I found the site because I was doing research about batteries and Wikipedia somehow sent me to Globalspec, and then I saw CR4 at the bottom of the page, and signed up and in.

I have described it (CR4) as What I wanted from Ham Radio.

A hoot it can be.

As I write now there are 95 online now, so you sort of figure ain't that many of us, CR4ers.

As a barometer of science issues and debates I feel it is superior. I wish that people the current President, or even the last one would drop in as "Guests" since the arguments are real.

The site is very well set up since you can be anonymous, if you need to be.

I do wish that there was a Political Science section where it was okay to discuss things in consideration of the effects of the tools and knowledge we have.

Administrators say that that is out of the realm, and that there are other places to go to do that, but I myself haven't found those places.

I think Facebook, is creepy for example.

Should I login and logout each time I visit CR4? I have been closing firefox to leave, then opening it again to return.

Vic

I never log out, but then I am not sure. Advantage of not logging out is that I am automatically logged in when I am on next session.

The major advantage to staying logged in is it saves your settings for showing comments as flat or threaded. Another advantage is that threads that you have read remain highlighted, and makes them easier to find if you don't subscribe to any.

I suggest logging out and closing firefox each time. It helps to stop sb getting up and down the cable. If you time it right, you can clip his remaining ear. I have one of his more vital bits nailed to the wall like a strip of mouldy biltong.

So lucky are not people. We don't like to foot anything forget about wrong foot.

BTW - the portion (you thought of me) was infact of the mouse that flew just before your computer exploded. I have made clear we don't need that to produce. Just a bit of food and water is enough. Bright light now we can generate by shorting wires inside your equipments.

Flicker my modem lights, doing you be.

Is it right to pluralize computer mouse as mice ? Maybe it's a question for WIMP ? I have 2 left feet (big ones), and a while back that cat had Aztec two-step. Ruby Murry was to blame. Delicious at the time, but not so much the morning after from what I heard.

Hi Vic (the entity),

Welcome to CR4, the place of the easily-distracted geniuses, whose multi-tasking capabilities defies the norm.

You can post any proposal (so long as it doesn't rock the boat so much, such as "revisiting the members' status", as that is akin to opening a can of worms, or a pandora's box). *That* post, for example, earned 5-star status in 2 days time.

You can also take pictures of some antiquated gadget or equipment, and ask the veterans if they can still recognize what it is. Just make sure you crop the picture to reveal only about 1/8th of the whole thing. That should be enough to keep us awake most nights, tossing and turning to the chagrin of the missus.

There is of course, the classic post, which is a question. This isn't as easy as it sounds. You have to be clear and concise. You may use standard web acronyms such as AFAIK, IMHO, OTOH, but don't ever use SMS (mobile texting) truncated lingo, or acronyms which are not familiar to engineers, i.e., known only to specialized disciplines such as lobotomists or accountants or <GASP> lawyers. Using SMS in asking a question will result only to direct assault on your person, and will fill your inbox with notices of replies that are real time-wasters.

Then, you can also post whatever catches your fancy, or spur-of-the-moment posts. These can be what you feel or think about anything, and I mean *any thing*. Just be coherent, and not hint to anybody that you're on medication or under the influence. I guarantee you, of the thousands of posters and lurkers in this forum (watch out for "Guest" because he's everywhere!), your post could get a 5-star rating without your even trying.

Finally, when looking for serious answers, validate the replies that got "good answers". What is food for one may be poison for another. And, of course, if you get satisfied with one reply, for goodness' sakes, rate it. This holds true for other posts that you read and deem as *sane*.

Enjoy your stay in CR4.

BTW, if you like my reply, rate it, as well.

And any time you want to insult anybody qualify it with a or but not with a or

Since you didn't

This holds true for other posts that you read and deem as *sane*.

and you cast aspersons on engineers equating them to other members of society by the last word , I don't rate you.

BTW- I consider to be the ultimate engineer, due to my profession.

Hi sb,

If you would kindly re-read my opening line, you will sense that everything is made in jest, consistent with what everyone was doing. None of it was meant to insult anyone. Neither did I use those smilies you indicated ( or ).

Nevertheless, my apologies if I have insulted you or hurt your sensibilities.

From your fellow engineer,

langyaw

We Gremlins can not be hurt . except by the insinuation that we are hurt.In an earlier post also there was an insinuation the I am getting feelings. Just because of that I had to go the GP (Gremlin Purgatory). I had to fix the hard disk of the earthling for that aspersion on my characterlessness.

(My post was in as much jest as yours , don't tell kris)

BTW the sanity is not the forte of most of the CR4 members especially the earthlings and that too the so-called engineers of them. You must have learnt by now.

Some sane ones are there - like physicist, Kris(squirrels dont keep on breaking a bath tub 2000+ times) , Milo, Del (sorry which sane cat makes a cross-bow) etc. You too look yet to join the league (after going thru so many posts on your thread). I had high hopes from you after the first thread on this post, but you can never trust these humans, they are.... .........just too human .

Did any one mark that Giorgia never came back ?

Perhaps Giorgia is brilliant, and knows how to resist encouraging us beyond what we can handle responsibly. I like to think of her that way, she was very intelligent at first glance.

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

**************

Giorgia,
Giorgia,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Giorgia on my mind
