Batteries for a Diesel Generator

03/05/2009 9:05 AM

we have Ni-Cd battery( for diesel Gen. with 600 kva-400 volt) but are damaged.

we want to replace them with lead-acid batt.( for some reasons)

please guide us how calculate them, which kind of them,is there any table or chart for this matter.or this is possible.(by note that existing control panel was designed for ni-cd batt.)

thanks.

More information would be needed to answer this question, specifically

What is the current voltage and Ah (Amp-hour) rating of the Ni-Cd battery (or pack of linked batteries)?

What space is available in the battery compartment (lead-acid batteries are physically larger and a similar equivalent battery may not fit)?

Also note that the existing Ni-Cd charging circuit (if any) will likely not be compatible with the new lead-acid battery (different battery chemistry's require different charging voltage levels and techniques). Depending on the existing charger circuitry it may able to be adjusted to suit charging lead-acid batteries.

you should check Voltage and Capacity of existing battery (it is easy found on the label) then buy the same Lead acid battery (Voltaga and Capacity)

What Engine? What starting voltage? if 12V 2 8D batteries in parallel should be sufficient. If 24V you would need four 8D's wired series/parallel

To #1 GA I would add that you need to know the peak starting current needed by the diesel generator. The equivalent lead acid batteries may cost less (if you can size the equivalent replacements), but you have to trade off the cost of necessary changes to the charging controls (without which the lead acid batteries would be overcharged and quickly destroyed).

I would suggest a slightly larger LA battery......they are so cheap who cares?

I use to work for a company that makes lead acid battery's, they have state of the art manufacturing facility. the company name is East Penn manufacturing, they are located in Lyons, Pa. If it is possible, I am sure if you call them they could help you. They make Deka forklift batteries as well. Good luck in your search. IF you could let me know how you made out i would appreceiate it.
