Given that it is possible to provide the type of control you want using any of several types of flow meters, a simple controller and a shut off valve. How is your leak shutdown system going to know the difference between a huge big leak and from one to several fire trucks drawing water from the main at the same time? I don't believe that water is valuable enough or dangerous enough to justify the expense involved even acknowledging the problems associated with dihydrogen monoxide toxicity and contamination.

There may be some justification where flammable or seriously toxic materials are involved. Indeed, some pipe lines do have automatic isolation systems on them. It is not usual for residential or even commercial branch lines to have such equipment.

The initial expense of the equipment, the installation and follow on maintenance costs will make most such projects economically unattractive.

Have FUN!

I have seen these systems on air systems. The design would allow a limited flow rate. If that flow rate was exceeded, the flow would be shut off. As if a hose were to burst, the air flow would be shot. It is also used on hydraulic systems on vehicles when a failure would be life threatening. (Think of a aerial bucket truck with a person in it.)

The problem with these devices is that they must be carefully matched to the device using the stored energy. They can not tell if your pipe has burst, or you and your wife are both taking showers at the same time. Nor can it tell if a pipe buried under a road has burst, or your block is all watering their grass at the same time. They only work if on individual items.

yes you are right so if all that was needed to stop flow there are laods of valves! now we must think of control flow at all levels of use. at your house when no ones home the gas line under your schools, the house next door when the boom happenes every one nows what to do this valve does not wait for an answer if the flow in the line it closes there by giveing you time to do what we do bess fix it. ps once closed it will not open till you open it. spot

Neither of Spots posts make any sense to me. I realize that I only speak English, but, the language fails me when trying to understand such things as:

"someone closeing them, same for gas lines.these lines run under play grown, schools, neborhoods, hwys and as there is nothing to stop these but man for are is there something else that does it instently with out man"

Really, seriously, as hard as I try I cannot formulate an answer to a question that DEFIES LOGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, give him a break will you? Here's a little article on his background; it'll help you to understand his problems a little better.
