Automatic Switch-Off for Electric Water Pump

03/08/2009 8:30 AM

Hi All

I am commerce student, i had a look at the 2006 postings, for Automatic Switch-Off for Electric Water Pump. I was looking for a circuit or a product which can by turn Automatic Switch On and Off for Electric Water Pump by itself information is technical for me,I have viewed a product where they are saying that it will turn on and off the pump according to water levels, here is the link. http://www.lefoo.comprolist.asp?ProdId=0026

If possiable can you send me details for the circuits? or suggestions how to do it by my self or should I purchase the above product?

Waiting for your rely.

Regards Vikram

Why not just get a submersible pump with an inbuilt float switch?

Thanks for quick response, I am not technical guy.

I am having submersible pump but not sure if I am getting inbuilt float switch will solve my problem?. I don't want to push button for on or off (keep track of water level of when i am running out of water in my tank), machine itself should know when to start and when to switch-off.

So do you recon that by FLOAT Switch is easy and best solution.

Can you please suggest couple of trusted websites for inbuilt float switch.

Some pumps already come with a float switch on a cable. You simply tie this cable to set the depth of water you need. As long as the water does not fall below a certain depth, the pump will run. Once it falls below a designed (by the manufacturer, not you) depth, it will automatically stop. If you're not a technical person, talk to a pump supplier and explain your requirement to him. He will be able to help you out.

If I am reading your question properly, you have a tank at some elevation above your pump. You want to control the pump according to the level in the tank. If that is the question, there are several answers. Some have already indicated the use of floats. That will work fine, however, if the tank is any appreciable distance from the pump site, the wiring between the tank and the pump may be difficult to install.

There was a mention of a pressure switch by one responder. That is probably the best solution. Install a differential pressure switch at a point in the line coming from the pump that is as low as you can get it. Then simply set the high and low points and connect them to a magnetic starter (or, if the pump is small, you can simply run the pump leads throught the contacts on the pressure switch).

There are other, more sophisticated types of level systems that can be employed such as submersible transducers, capacitance probes and any number of other level sensing devices, but these are probably not cost effective in you case.

If your pumping from a tank you can build in a low\high level float switch, or if your pump has a back flow valve you can put a pressure switch at the output side of the pump to control the motor.

Hi mad4u

You would require the switches in the tank. There is a wide range available to choose from. Get some quotes.

If your water supply at the pump is limited you may require a switch at the pump as well.

What is the purpose of the pump? What condition would turn it on and what would turn it off?

Purpose of the pump is to take water from down stairs tank and pump water to top floor.

Condition is that on certain level in the tank it should switch on(say if the water level is dropping to 6 inches in the tank from the ground level it should turn on and turn off when it reaches to few inches left in the tank) when it reaches max in the tank it should turn off by it self!.

I should NOT manually switch on an off the pump.

I built something like this to control the pump to empty a sump in my house. Except your application sounds much larger, but that's the pumps problem not the control's.

"Condition is that on certain level in the tank it should switch on(say if the water level is dropping to 6 inches in the tank from the ground level it should turn on and turn off when it reaches to few inches left in the tank) when it reaches max in the tank it should turn off by it self!."

I'll guess that the "6 inches" and the "max in the tank" refer to the upper tank and the "few inches left in the tank" refers to the lower tank.

You have one condition to turn the pump on and either of two conditions to turn the pump off.

You would need 2 floats, one in each tank, a relay to control the pump, and 3 switches. The switches could be types that could be wired to be normally open or normally closed or you could use 1 normally open and 2 normally closed.

When the upper float has dropped to "6 inches" it should trigger a normally open switch (s1) to the closed position. When the upper float has risen to "max in tank" it should trigger a normally closed switch (s2) to the open position.

When the lower float has dropped to the "few inches left in tank" it should trigger a normally closed switch (s3) to the open position.

The power should go to s1 then to the relay to turn it on. Output from the relay should go to the pump and to s2 and then to s3 and then back to the relay to hold it on.

Closing s1 would turn the pump on. Opening s2 OR s3 would turn it off.

I'll see if I can draw up a wiring diagram and post it later.

Lew

Re: Automatic Switch-Off for Electric Water Pump

In my country, we used pressure tanks with pressure switches. They were installed between the water source (well) and the main inlet pipe leading to the house. A water pump is necessarily situated also between the well and the pressure tank.

The purpose of the equipment was to assure a steady supply of water flowing through the house's faucets at a steady pressure. As water is used in the house, and the pressure drops in the pressure tank to a certain level, the pressure switch turns on the pump, and water fills the tank. Once the max pressure level is reached, it switches off the pump, too.

Here's how it looks:

Go to this site to know more about this set up. Clicking on the pic above will do that, as well.

Regards

I have been using a locally designed control for max-level only, but it can be added with circuit to control min & Max both levels.

Hope of any use.

Any query is welcome
