AC generator head for home built VAWT - Vertical Axis Wind Tower

03/09/2009 2:52 PM

I am researching building a vertical axis wind generation systems. I wanted to know if anyone has experience with a home/farm wind energy system with a generator head like Northern Tool's: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_8795_8795

18 HP or greater (3480-3780 RPM gen operating speed)

What experiences anyone has had?

Recommendations to tie in with the Grid?

Information on Automatic Disconnect Switching from the grid when there is a grid black out? I have found many generator fail over ATS boxes but not a simplified inverter-less Island switch. Or I may be reading their descriptions incorrectly.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I already obtained the professional resources and local code requirements for adding a system to my home.

The windstuff description talks about the need for limiting the the RPM's of the device in high winds but I am sure VAWT's are self limiting unlike their propeller bladed cousins. The VAWT's surface begins dumping the excess force above, I believe, 20MPH. That's one of their main advantages: no need for overspeed and braking devices.

Hi, Stubby!

Welcome to CR4!

I haven't seen the article for a long time (took it from an email I had forwarded it to a friend with), but I seem to recall that the DIY guy talked about the natural braking action of the alternator preventing overspeed, or some such due to its construction. I could be mistaken.

"Stubby!" What a great handle. It was the nickname given to my dad by his adoring high school students when he taught English, so I'm very fond of it. Use it in good health. (When he wrestled in his university days, his nickname was "Vest-pocket Hercules".)

I live on the south side of a lake in Oklahoma. Winds are regularly at 20MPH and "VERY" frequently above 30MPH with 50 MPH gusting so I've pretty much decided on a VAWT. Now I'm down to the route I should go for the generator itself. None of the tower mounted gen/inverter HAWT manufacturers are too willing to explain their solutions in detail so I am posting here. I also have a dual fuel LP/GAS backup generator. I would like to have the wind/grid/generator switching as simple as possible and off the shelf DIY as much as possible.

Open to any positive feedback!

Hi, MichaelLDelaney!

Sorry my lead didn't give you what you wanted. I thought it pretty well covered all the bases of a DIY VAWT. Dd you try emailing the author for more info?
