With the stimulus package in place, NSF has 50% more money for grants.
The question is, is it enough? Although a 50% increase is sizable, it only amounts to a couple of billion. That's out of a 500 Billion plus stimulus plan. Science can also continue to go to the military for grants and the DOE will have more money for grants.
How much of a priority should funding Science be in the U.S.? I would argue that when the government funds science, it invest in it's future economy, much in the way an R&D budget for a company helps spur new products and markets for that company. Yet R&D budgets represent a much higher percent of cost for private industry than for the government.
Isn't it reasonable to argue that increased spending in Science is a wise investment for any government? Why is it the first thing cut from budgets (and this stimulus) is always science? Hasn't history shown that countries that turn away from technological advancement decline?
