Pelton Wheel Design

03/10/2009 9:26 PM

I have been tasked with designing a Pelton wheel from scratch. Does anyone know where to find design charts or anything pertaining to the overall design?

Do you mean starting with the 1880 patent and redesigning components?

The percentage improvement you may achieve (over current equipment) would not warrant the investment.

Faster needle control to adjust for load changes would reduce wasting of water by introducing a scoop into the stream when the pelton is running away. But this improvement should not be at the expense of safety and reliability.

Do you mean designing a plant from scratch? That is almost standard because each situation should be considered unique.

Try Home Power Magazine. If your looking at a large unit (larger than 2-3 kVA) consult with Canyon Industries.

If I might suggest you may get I much better return on your time and investment by using the design of a Tesla Turbine.

I would like to thank everyone for their input and their time as it has been very helpful. I am designing this Pelton wheel as part of a wave energy conversion scheme based on the concept of oscillating wave surge converters for my final year masters project and all of your help has been much appreciated. Thanks again!
