Please Help Me Find Cellular Amplified Antenna Plans

11/09/2006 11:17 PM

I am somewhat handy (although not completely versed) in electronics. I have looked high and low for the plans to build an antenea amplifier such as Wilson and others make. I want one to handle CDMA, TDMA and GSM bands. I would like to include a potentiometer (in a seperate small box to mount on dashboard) to control the power (or actually gain) on this unit. This way I could run the lowest power needed for bi-directional transmission. I would like to build a unit that will provide maybe a max of 70-100 dB gain bi-directionally. If you can point me in the correct direction I would appreciate it. I am a disabled vet and a full-time college student (though not in electronics) and can not afford the high cost of a commercially avaiable model. I am sure this shouldn't be too complecated and the parts not too expensive (I hope)

Please reply

Thank you for your time and consideration.

70-100 db of bidirectional gain on those bands? ya better tie that thing down

OK not sure what that means. They have 60dB but I cant afford it being a full time student so thought up to 100 would be good. I live in PA and we have terrain problems that can be a challange for cellular. Maybe 60 would be good enough. Do you know how I can get plans to build a good one?? I drive 30 miles to a friends house and have no coverage for about 15 miles of it. This in an area where if you needed help for whatever reason could be a real challange.

I've already checked with Radio Shack and they say that they can order a prject box with external heat sinks but maybe can find a better supply for the parts. Please let me know if you can help. Thank you!

Respectfully;

James

what I meant was there are risks of feedback and desensing from bad isolation with bidirectional amplifiers that can cover all those bands. They call these parasitic oscillations and even though you may not hear it, the amplifier might do this, full power, at 1800 Mhz(or other band) and that would make it almost useless to you.

with 100 db gain you would havean unworkable amplifier and stray reflectons from the out put would enter the input and be amplified. Think like a microphone on stage with speakers...too much gain = squealing. Sure the audio people can put in delays etc, but that is harder at RF frequencies.

Find out who supplies your cel service and go to their office and look at their coverage map. It may be you can select a better route with more people/traffic, that makes it worth the effort for the company to service that area.

I just happened to run across this website a few weeks ago when looking for something else . . . http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/index.html

Try starting there and you may find someone who has built a low-cost cell phone amp.

Good luck!
