How to Select Vibration Measurement Equipment

03/13/2009 12:02 AM

I need to buy a vibration measurement, but I'm not sure about what is the best.

I´d like to know what are the main features or characteristics, frequency range, etc.

What is the most reliable?

I work with gas compressors, turbines,

Regards

There are several reputed companies on market that will supply you these equipments.

Are you a manufacturer or a user.

If you are manufacturer you may prefer the test bench equipments and if user then portable may be preferable (condition monitoring).

NI (National instruments), Vibratech are two companies that have both the models and we are using them (rather our testing group is using) and there are no problems with them. (I am not involved with details but if you go to their websites and spell out your requirements, they will recommend the correct model and the quotation - that's how our people did)

You can also use a piezoelectric accelerometer that produces voltage in terms of acceleration, or displacements.and vibration waveform can be viewed on CRO.

They are designed for VHF with inbuilt integrated circuits,

The best thing you can buy is a scanning laser vibrometer. It is an amazing instrument for vibration measurement

Here is brochure on its use in turbine measurements

http://polytec.com/usa/_files/LM_AN_INFO_0206_E_Jet_Engine_Testing.pdf

We have one from polytec. They are non-contact, superior high frequency, unaffected by temperature and easy to set up and use. It will overlay a complete modal map on top of a video picture of your part or lay a modal skin across a cad represetation of your part. It can scan one point or a whole surface of hundreds of points and bring together the phase information or show amplitudes and motion.

Here a couple of online videos that show how the systems work.

http://polytec.com/usa/_files/LM_VibVideo_P3_Principle_Mid_EN.wmv (8Mb)

http://polytec.com/usa/_files/LM_Vib_Video_Mid_EN.wmv (25Mb)

Hope this helps

Recommended steps in procuring bibration equipment:

1. Inquire with equipment supplier recommended tools and if all info are available, check if said equipments can be used to both turbine, compressors and other ancillary equipment such us pumps, AHU's, CTV chillers and others. - In this way you will justified your requirements to the higher management.

2. Pls. check other CR4 contributors recommended suppliers for more info and analyze practical tools you may required.

If you want a high quality but low cost Dynamic Signal Analyzer for vibration studies, try Stanford Research. Here is a link to a brochure.
