Vista or XP for Compaq Presario 702TU laptop

My opinion: Buy yourself am MP3 player for your music, and stick with XP; unless you enjoy pain, in which case feel free to use Vista.

The OP has the drivers though is jumping through the XP hoop machine to get them to install and be recognized. Ther are of course several reasons the computer maybe be being weird and using Vista instead may be easier but is not worth at this time. XP is just quirky at times and there is the fun right

Might try M$ 7, Vista is a Dog. M$ is already replacing it.

What is failing to install? The sound drivers or the O/S?

Any system that will run Vista will run XP, save your money.

Sound drivers can't install.

In device manager delete the audio drivers, reboot. In device manager reinstall the drivers from the O/S disc, reboot.

What player?

It sounds like your plug-n-play sound card is not working properly. You could try searching for the 3D Sound Blaster Pro compatible sound 16 bit integrated drivers and installing them by add hardware wizard. From your apparent level of expertise I would suggest replacing your repair person though.

If it runs on Vista, it will run better on XP.

When Windows Vista came out, they changed how the hardware has to interface with the OS, so the hardware manufacturers had to rewrite many of their drivers. There were some hardware manufacturers that decided they would no longer provide drivers for XP, because of time and expense they had to expend for the new Vista drivers. This is especially true for the more proprietary hardware often used in laptops. If it was me, I'd try to stick with XP, and do a good internet search on your issue, there are probably other people out there who have the same issue. There are many people who desired to "downgrade" to XP from Vista, and there may just be someone who's figured out how to get around the problem.

There is a "slight" chance that the Compaq might be able to help with the issue, if you get through to their technical support. But I would guess they are going to tell you that XP is not supported on that laptop. Good luck!

Well, the answer is very simple. The volume is not the same on XP as it is on Vista. To change the volume, and clean the cmos..but better if you take the harddrive and ask somebody to erase the contents, then you can boot the drive with XP again.On so called "Bootdisc" you can found these kind of programs, which you can use to erase a drive with like "Micro XP" or something it called... can sometimes be found on torrentsites... or the "Vista boot disc" I think.. but I know for sure that if you found one of these discs you will found that program which you can use to erase the drive with. The volume is higher then XP. the explanation is easy, because imagine that you want to boot in a computer and it has XP installed as OS, but you want to boot it in to Windows 2000. The idea won´t work, simply because Windows 2000 is older then XP and the volume is much smaller also. But it is not a good idea to boot in a Vista computer to XP I think, but you can do it, no problem.

Here is a solution on your problem also, and try it, before you reinstall the OS again.

The OP isn't having O/S install problems; It is the audio drivers and it maybe that OP is trying to install older drivers too. I hadn't thought of that before oops.

go to dell and down load the sound blaster program. it is plug and play

XP is very stable SP3 why use Vista maybe Windows 7.

Sorry to hear you have an HP, I had nothing but issues with mine. Got a nasty worm and locked it down HP's proprietary administrator rights would not let me get rid of it and when I had to reboot it ate my system. After two years I had so many issues costco refunded my money.
