Windows XP + Home

03/15/2009 5:37 AM

Hi,

My kodak z1485 IS connects to my laptop, which is running windows xp home, without any software, just installing it straight away, but my desktop, which is running XP PRO doesn't recognise the camera, without installing the world's most annoying software (kodak easyshare), which you can't stop from starting on bootup. Is there anyway to either get the camera recognised without software, or to stop easyshare from starting on bootup?

Thanks

Bondy111

Have you tried a Google search for the camera driver?

I haven't met the Kodak software, but I'd lay odds the HP crap offering is a close contender for "world's most annoying" . Can you stop it loading with Start > run > msconfig ?

Lazy man's answer: put in s SDHC/SD card reader for the camera's SDHC/SD card.

If most of the fun is getting there for you: make sure you have admin permissions to install drivers first. Is there a possibility that if you install the annoying software and uninstall it the camera drivers will stay behind? If not, install Easy Share, try copying the driver files newly added on software install (not those in the app directory) to a safe place, note where they were installed, uninstall Easy Share, and put the copied driver files where they were when the software was installed... Then manually add the USB driver for the camera specifying the known file name location(s). The first option is safer, but you don't get the warm and fuzzy "I didn't do what the manufacturer wanted" feeling.

Run belarc advisor and determine what the laptop has that the Desktop doesn't and use http://www.pcdecrapifier.com to stop or remove crap.

I had the same problem with an older Kodak digital camera. I found I did not have to install easy share if I went at it from add and remove programs from the control panel.

When you get to the point of where to look for drivers just click on the have disk button and point it to the cd for the Kodak software. This will usually just install the camera driver and not the whole program.

Hope that helps.

Easy share annoying? I have it, and never notice it running at all until I hit the bar on my camera dock. Then it pops up a splash screen and down loads all my photos to the hard drive on the computer. Definitely not annoying, definitely helpful. Maybe you don't have the camera dock? Maybe you have a different version than me? Maybe you haven't read the directions? (I'm betting on that last one...) Folks, the reason they put all those cool help files and tutorials out there is so that you can read them. Yes, Yes, I know that in this day and age everyone expects to be able to do everything on the computer without ever bothering to read the instructions after all reading is for idiots nobody does that anymore...

Bondy,

If you go to "Start", "Run", and type "MSCONFIG", you can go to the "STARTUP" tab and un-check the Kodak software, this will prevent it from running on startup. The driver will probably still load, unless it's tied to EasyShare software, you'll just have to experiment.

I went through the same issue with our kodak but a few years ago now. Easyshare is easily the most pointless piece of software ever. I uninstalled easyshare and just plugged the camera in via its docking station. But when it was searching for the drivers to 'add hardware' I'm sure I found them on the install CD, just dig through the directories. If it fails to find them, you may be able to search the CD for *.inf extension, likely named oemsetup.inf. If I could find the disk I'd give you the name

Good hunting.

Ditto the MSCONFIG path.

I have a Kodak camera that I didn't think was working with XP but when I opened "My Computer" there it was. You can double click on a camera just like a drive and read it's contents. If this works, then just uninstall the Kodak software.

I plugged it back in to xp pro, and it recognises it, but doesn't come up in my computer, or in computer management. Any ideas, It has the driver, just doesn't put the link in my computer

Do you have any photo processing packages (Photoshop, Paintshop etc)? They generally have some kind of import function (may be called 'download images' or whatever), which seems able to find cameras, scanners etc.

Something you could try is FastStone Image Viewer, an excellent (& free - for non-commercial users) image handing package. File > download photos yields a form which has a dropdown list of all image capture devices it can find attached to the PC.

No, I have no photo editing software, and I don't think the computer is fast enough to run fast stone. I tried another free one a while back, can't remember what it was, but slowed the computer down too much.

Hi Bondy,

according to Kodak's page, your camera can use an SD card.

stick the SD card in your PC's card reader slot, and you bypass EasyShare entirely.

disable the software's autostart in msconfig, as suggested in other posts.

HTH!

I use a SD card, but also take pictures on to the camera's memory when the sd card is full.
