Dear One,

Conservator tank located on top of transformer main tank. the function this tank is to maintain oil level inside the transformer during transformer respiration. that why conservator tank not filled full, it should be 3/4th.

Desiccant tank for draining the oil during any oil fire inside the transformer, which protect the main tan and winding inside the tank.this tank is located away from transformer yard.

hope I clear your question.

When the transformer works, due to losses in the transformer, the oil heats up and expands. In case of idle time, it cools down and contracts.

To fill the loss/ expansion in oil volume, and to avoid the resultant pressureisation/ depressurisation of the transformer tank, the conservator is used. As the oil heats up, the extra volume is pushed into conservator and as it cools down, it is drawn from it.

However during these operation , though the oil volume in the tank can be maintained, the pressure can not be.

So the tank is allowed to breat the atmospheric air (and in certain cases nitrogen is used for safety too) To avoid the moisture coming in and contaminating the oil during breathing in and out, desiccant and filters(for dust) are connected to the breathing line.
