Compressor Switching

03/17/2009 9:43 AM

I have a 240 V (2 ampere) compressor that I want to turn on and off using a voltage of 1.8V and 0V respectively. Can anyone recommend the simplest way of doing this preferably with a commercially available device.

All responses welcome.

How about a bit of homebrew construction around this?

You have not specified if voltage is 240VAC or 240VDC. In case of AC Voltage you can use a triac with low trigger voltage(less then 1.8Volts in your case)

If its DC voltage you can use a high voltage transistor directly or a low voltage transistor with a relay.

use your avilable low volt signal to make relay on and off use necessary electronic coupling cicuit . relay will ensure isolation bet low signal voltage and contact of relay in high motor voltage it a safer and dividing device to work for elect and electronics master who always urgue when results are not as expected

dear,

what is the frequency of the operation ? i.e. on & off perations / miniute - Hr.?

you may select solid state relay device & get it wired up by a local electric panel builder.

Assuming you have sufficient current available from your low voltage source, I would use a motor contactor and buy or make a low voltge coil for it. If you don't have the required current, you can use a relay to actuate the contactor.

Thanks thats helpful. I dont know current from low voltage source but would assume it to be very low as it is just output from led on pic board. supply to whole board is only 0.3 Amps.
