If you don't have any company standards, country/local requirements, nor Occupational Health and Safety regulations to follow, you could go with ASME A13.1:

I do not know - you will have to check with your local government/agency/regulator/insurer - it should be in an "Occupational Health and Safety" (or similarly titled standard) regulation.

Good advice from XMech (as usual).

Guest, we do not know your location, but if you were in South Africa the following could be appropriate. http://www.neutron.co.za/pipes.htm

These colours are not too different from those I have seen in other parts of the world, but note the disclaimer and take into account your own country's laws and requirements if applicable.

NOSA = the South African National Occupational Safety Association

Following on from above, it is unneccessary to paint the pipes throughout, as self-adhesive tapes with the colour and lettering already printed are readily available. The tapes simply stick onto the pipe, or indeed, over its insulation cladding. Arrows are also available to indicate the direction of flow.

In the case of plastic pipes in particular, one is far better off with self-adhesive tape banding. One wouldn't want to affect the plastic structure underneath in any way.....

And what about background color in case when pipe color is the same as marking colour? Is it white? In ISO_14726 there is NO information or reconendations about it.
