Perforating Wheel Information

03/19/2009 1:38 PM

I'm looking for information about inline perforating. I am trying to perforate a substrate of .020" to .040" thickness, parallel to web direction at speeds between 200-400fpm. The substrate is flexible but not elastic. I would like to do this with a rotary wheel (around 4" OD and anvil) where the perforating wheel actually removes material, in roughly 1/16" diameter holes (hole shape is not too critical).

Any help, sugestions or ideas are welcome.

Please see illistrations below, this is an antique perforator used by the Post Office:

You might consider perforating your substrate with a laser. It would be an expensive laser but the mechanics would be simple.

Thanks welderman- I have thought of this and looked into it. The cost is why I'm still considering the rotary perforating wheel. The cost would be minimal especially when compared to lasers. BUT...I'm still open to whatever works. Do you know a good laser company that could do this and/or do you have experience perforating with lasers?

Sorry, I have been away from lasers for a long time, but about 25 years ago we were perforating ceramic plates with YAG lasers to assist in precise breaking. It worked well. A Global Spec or Google search should help locate appropriate companies.

Try Rotometrics They are a top notch supplier that I have dealt with for years. If they don't have it they can make it.

I briefly looked through their website and it looks like they could probably make something to do what I am looking for. Thanks.

I'm still open if anyone else has some other ideas or experience.....

Are you still looking for a rotary perforator?
