George Wyman's 1903 Transcontinental Motorcycle Crossing

03/19/2009 7:25 PM

I was looking at Tod Rafferty's Motorcycle Encyclopedia which has a photo of the 1903 type California Motorcycle that George Wyman used to make the very first transcontinental crossing in 1903. It has the motor listed as 200 cc with 1.25 hp.
Weight is given as 100 lbs. Could it be that the weight given as 90 lbs. in Hall of Fame and CR4 listing is juxtaposed with 90 cc motor? In those days it took 200 cc to get 1.25 hp. but from photo there is no way to judge displacement. Question is 90 cc or 200 cc?

If you post a link it will be easier for us old lazybones to answer your question.

Thanks for the link Moose. I guess I should have been more specific. I was asking Guest for a link to the motorcycle encyclopedia he was referencing. I have since Googled it.

You're welcome, Shadetree. With regard to the Guest's question, I did find this additional link by Googling "george wyman motorcyle cc"

Note the last sentence in the first paragraph: "Their new product got a major push when in that same year a benchmark in motorcycling history was accomplished aboard a 90 cc California piloted by George Wyman."

Thanks again Moose,

I love those old machines. I may replicate one with a sidecar someday if I don't get too old and feeble first.
