Wanted: Threaded Aluminum Bung

03/24/2009 5:57 AM

I am trying to locate an aluminum threaded bung that will slip inside a 2" O.D pipe so it can be welded in place. Also required is a threaded cap to fit the bung. If anyone knows a site or company that these can be purchased from it would be a great help. Thank you in advance. William in Canada.

Welded in place in a steel pipe or aluminum pipe?

Any machine shop can produce aluminum threaded bungs, but I wouldn't presume to think that such are a standard product of any company.

Yes, I agree with the machine shop idea, but I was wondering if these were already made by a firm that I could purchase, like a bulk item. The welding will be in an aluminum pipe if the cap and bung are aluminum and the same if its stainless, bung/cap. Thanks.

If you're after bulk quantity, then look for "Aluminium die casting" firms that could produce these very competitively for you.

By all means, use the machine shop to produce prototypes, but for high volume the cost advantage of die casting will come into play.

Least expensive option -

I would thread the pipe and use a threaded coupling and put a plug in the coupling or just put a threaded cap on the pipe. Just take the pipe to a plumbing shop or have a plumber bring his pipe die to the pipe. You may also be able to buy a pipe die in a hardware store. Teflon tape may seal the threads. The piping materials mix may not be a big deal, depending upon how long this has to last and a lot more info about what is in the pipe, etc ?

More expensive -

There are weld couplings, that would be slipon weld by threaded (or screwed to any pipefitter). Go to a steam-fitter or weld shop, depending upon pressure, and codes, etc. for the application.

Without know what types of materials, wall thickness, fluid or gas in the pipe, pressure, and lots more questions all answers are subject to change...

Here is some information to get you started.

Male threads: Measure the outside diameter of the large portion of the thread at "A"; Find figure nearest this dimension in column 1 or 2 of chart. The dimension in column 3 will be your nominal pipe thread size.

Female Threads: Measure top diameter of thread at "B"; Find figure nearest this dimension in column 1 or 2 of chart. The dimension in column 3 will be your nominal pipe thread size.
