What Stickers Won't Stick To

03/27/2009 1:52 PM

can any one please tell me is there any material which is non stick to stickers...especialy in metals, in a paper pasting process i m developing a die in which adhesive paper roll travels for masking some electronic component ,which passes thru a metalic plates with a frictional contact with metalic steel plate, so while feeding of this paper strip like treadmill, it should not stick to the area where not needed, or where i dont want it to be stamped ... urgent reply will be a great favour....

So, I don't think i have a clear picture. Alas, possibly a teflon coating, or some type of oil film?

Well i'd have to assume it can be coated on steel, considering all most of my cookware is teflon coated steel. stickers seem to peel off easily.

i'll provide a few links you can follow. http://www.metcoat.com/ptfe.htm?_vsrefdom=ppcgoogle&tsid=googleppc&ex=trej7n-eep549-11ldcqk&gclid=CLe9qZjaw5kCFRFMagoduSShtQ

http://www.coatingsolutions.com/?src=overture

Those links are products of a quick google search. Try "non stick industrial coatings" search

Dupont makes a spray on Teflon coating that is then baked on. May due for your application. Look for distributors in your area. You can all so try industrial roller manufacturers or roller service companies. They finish rollers for different applications with a selection of materials. Heat plates used in the fenestration industry are some times cover with Teflon so that the vinyl does not stick. Several companies make a self adhesive woven teflon product that is used. http://andrewroberts.com. You can also get Teflon sheets that one side has been etched for adhesives

We use the woven sheeting if it get damage its relatively easy to remove and replace compared with bonded coating which will take a good bit of prep to repair.

Hi mme,

sounds like you're using masking tape here. you can wrap your die with the same glossy paper material used in the backs of stickers themselves, especially these double-sided tape. you can check with the manufacturer of the masking tape you're using. they could even provide you with such materials themselves.

with such a setup, once the wrapper stops repelling the tape (due to wear and tear), you can simply re-wrap your die. other coatings (teflon, for example) won't repel stickers when they begin to get scratched and worn.

HTH!

I remember now the type of paper we used in wrapping cold-rolled steel coils in.

WAX PAPER. it had a glossy surface and won't hold stickers. I think that'll be cost effective for your operation.

I also don't have a clear picture, but maybe you can consider purchasing through a local label printer some un-printed stock.

This can be cut on a die to match exactly your placement area through the roll web - meaning the label material to stick, would only apply itself to the area you want.

A good label Manufacturer can help you with that lay-down pattern if this is feasible

Hello metal master engg,

I have worked in the coating and lamination industry for several years and the issue you are facing can be solved in a number of ways. Here are two things to consider:

  1. The surfaces to which you do not wish the label stock to stick, need to be of a very low surface energy. There are ways of measuring this with dyne solutions. There were some very good suggestions for different low-energy surface preparations in some of the posts. Teflon would probably be good, but may be cost-prohibitive. Another solution could be a spray silicone using a "mask". Silicone coatings are used extensively on peel-off tape backings (release liners for band-aids and such).
  2. The other thing to consider is the adhesive on the label itself. There are many different types of pressure-sensitive adhesives, with varying degrees of adhesion to substrates. There are some adhesives that will adhere quite strongly even to silicon-coated release liners! If you have some leeway in choosing the label stock you are using, you may be able to find part of the solution in this area as well. It may be difficult to track down the type of adhesive used in a given label. If I knew the label manufacturer, I might be able to help. Let me know.

Good Luck,

Mike

I have found silicone to be the best - oil or grease. Use it sparingly as it can also make the sticker - non-stick - use a dilute solution. Baking after application might help but this is more effective on glass (silica) surfaces. Silicones have an affinity for glass.

thanx all of you, for giving ur suggestions and ur valuebale time ,i have succesfuly done it now without teflon or siliconlayer for cuttingt, cutting ,i just machined and grinded my cavity die at outer edges 1 mm all around and the puch which shears this labels, cut this roll paper tape, and the edges to all four rectangle waste sides, like cinema film roll or like old wooden ladder shape wastage ,is not sticking to die edges ,where as punched rectangular part cuts through and paste it pressing where i want...any way thanx everybody..........

Metal master Engineering,

Your problem is to aviod tackiness of passing adhesive coat on a guide roller during contact passage, if I am rightly understanding. 1]Non stick paints after application and dry curing can be tried.

2]The guide roller can be dismantled, given for a professional TEFLON polymer coating, which is a typical non stick polymer.

3]You can mix araldite+hardener[epoxy adhesive combination50/50-10%],add this to silicon emulsions-80 to 90%[ add little fevicol white],which is a non stick metal coat, to be heat cured.

4]If moisture is not a problem apply soap solution by contact blade/sponge /scrapper rollers so that it will prevent tackiness.

These are simple non stick metal coat ideas which worked for me at earlier instants.

* Better try all these on a small piece of metal roller ,check for workability and proceed.

Report outcome.

Nickel/PTFE coating might do the job. It gives you the non-stick surface of PTFE but increases the wear resistance. Several companies offer this, here's one from Poeton.
