Heat exchnagers with Condensate pot

03/28/2009 1:04 AM

In Heat exhangers where the steam is source of heat i.e heating medium and it loose heat in the exchanger, and condensate starts forming...to remove the condensate we go for steam traps and some times we go for condensate pot. what r different situations unders which we go for the condensate pot. and how does it effect in selected the height of exchangers??

we go for steam traps and some times we go for condensate pot.

Singlaatul do not complicate yourself. In both the cases you have to go for the steam traps because the only reasons where condensate pot is used is where a heat exchanger/ any unit is say in a pit and you cannot install the steam trap hence a condensate pot is selected which has a sipon to push the hot condensate at a height enabling you to install your steam trap on that siphon pipe.

condensate pots are very common in coil heated tanks (hot water/furnace oil) where you need to install a pot inside the tank to siphon the condensate up and install the steam trap on the outlet of the siphon because it is not possible to install steam trap inside the tank bottom.

It is just to easy in maintenance.

Irrespective, in both the cases the steam trap to drain into a condensate pump receiver and pumped to boiler feed tank.

i do'nt agree with your opinion that in both cases steam traps should be provided. if condensate pot is applied downstream of steam heater or reboiler, the condensate will be accumulated in it and then with a level control system, it will be sent to down stream unit (condensate polishing system).

I think the selction using steam trap or condenaste pot is based on caapcity of generated condensate.

Yes i agree with you in this System (the condensate will be accumulated in it and then with a level control system, it will be sent to down stream unit (condensate polishing system). But if:

a) it is a heating tank that you need to lift the condensate, the siphon of the condensate pot is lifted up and trap fitted.

b) if it is Cylinder Drying Range and the steam supply & return is at the machine's roof top the siphon of the condensate pot is lifted up and then fitted with a trap.

Normally we adopt to a) or b) only as an option where a condensate pump cannot be located.

Yours is an ideal answer to your system of condensate pot draining.

There is also one another application mostly in Textile Dyeing machines with temperature control valve system where the Receiver of the packaged Condensate power Pump collects the condensate , gives it to the pump. the outlet is not connected via a non return to the condensate main but the heat exchanger's steam trap is installed at the pump outlet and the trap lifts the condensate. the pump pushes the condensate to the trap, the receiver collects the condensate from the heat exchanger. This system is necessary for when the temperature control valve shuts off steam and there is no pressure therefore, to void water logging of the heat exchanger this system is adopted to overcome stalling problems.

Yep. different application different methods. depends on the engineer's knowledge of how best to solve the problem.

Your talking about a condensate return pump.

Nicholson has a great return pump called Condensate Commander

It’s basically a steam trap that holds the condensate unto its reservoir trips a float and it then it returns the condensate with steam.
