What's the Best Temperature Controller?

03/31/2009 11:27 AM

Who makes the best auto-tune temperature controller? I run temps from 350 to 1100 F.

They all use the Ziegler-Nicholls tuning criteria in their auto-tune algorithms, so it is not possible to say.

Hello, I would recommend a Watlow controller. I use a Watlow controller, S thermocouple, and a Watlow 75 amp Din a Mite solid state relay on my main glass furnace and I have had very good results with it. I use the cheaper temp. controllers (Ebay for 50 bucks) with K thermocouple on my lower temp annealing ovens and have had good service from them also. I use the Watlow on the main furnace because I can't afford to have a problem with it like I could on the annealers. I guess it is all up to how much you want to spend and how critical it is to you. The good thing about Watlow is that they have a number you can call and get help if you have a problem and they also come with a very good manual.

Hi there,

Impossible to answer as we all have different preferences.

Besides this - alot will depend on your process dynamics as well as the area classification etc. Do you want a stand-alone controller? Are you willing to put in a new DCS/PLC? Is your instrumentation in 100% condition?

Personally - I do not like auto tuners. You tune a loop for the current instrumentation and process. As your valve or transmitter starts to go out, you will notice that the loop tuning is no longer working properly. This is a good sign for maintenance. With auto tuners - you do not notice this degradation as easily.

With that said, if I was actually forced to use a auto-tuner - Siemens PID self tuner. Beware that you will need to use the Siemens software for this.

If you are looking for a very good tuning package - try Protuner. You can get more info at www.controlloop.co.za

Regards,

Craig
