An operation the size of a power plant will have its own extensive standards on power cable, and its Engineering Standards Manual is the next destination.

b.rajgopal,

Your question asks for a big answer in a small space. General sources of information will be: Equipment manufacturers, Cable manufacturers, and Vendor catalogs.

From an engineering viewpoint, you need to select cables that can transmit the desired signal without significant distortion or error from its source to its destination. The type of signal will greatly dictate the cable type or construction being used. The signal types can be digital communications at a specified speed and using a specified protocol, analog, discrete at different voltage levels, etc.

The route of the cable imposes requirements for different environmental factors such as:

  • temperature (different insulation types have different ratings),
  • presence of oils or other contaminants (affect the durability of the jacketing or cable insulation,
  • nearby sources of electrical or electronic noise (shielding, conduit, separation distance),
  • voltage levels (insulation type and thickness, physical separators, conduits, grouping of cables),
  • distance (gauge of cables, integrity of the signal or communication),
  • supporting means (cables must be rated for the types of support, such as cable tray),
  • available space (multicore cables, heat build-up, separation problems),
  • accessibility for maintenance or inspection (often overlooked),
  • protection from physical damage (sunlight, vibration, abrasion, being hit or crushed),
  • survivability in the event of a fire or other malfunction in the plant (redundant sensors and controls with different cable routings),
  • and more.

I think this is a topic you will have to spend time studying. Ask yourself questions as your study the various sources you find.
