Designing a Rubber Tree Tapping Machine

04/03/2009 9:05 AM

Hi ,

I am struggling to develop a Rubber tree tapping machine to extract the natural rubber. It is the need of time because of the scarcity of rubber tapping labours and demanding high wages. If any body is interesting and has any idea to share on this, please share that would be an added value for me

Generic requirements are as follows

The machine has to get on daily , early morning

The sharp narrow knife or blade designed should cut the bark of the tree in .8 to 1 cm thickness. For this the time taken would be a fraction of minutes

Knife movement would be 60 degree angle downward

After the process, the knife has to return back to the initial location(starting position)

Sensor should be there to detect rain , if the tree is wet , the machine shouldn't work

these are the generic requirements..if some body interesting, can share more

Looking forward more suggestions and ideas

Thanks

Juby

I can certainly help develop your requirements

1. Does it have to move itself or is it carried around?

Power source

Ground smoothness, solidity

How does it identify a *tree*

2. How is the sap captured - should the machine attach something to the tree.

3. How is the sap returned after collection

4. Does it have to tap a tree freshly everyday, or is a tree tapped but once for the *season*

5. Pile on fellas - I was just getting started

hi ,here's wat im lookin for:

1. a worker should be able to carry it around

2. it should be easy to use, requirig minimum worker skill.

3.identification of the tree is'nt a problem , because the worker can do that himself.

4.preferably battery powered.

5,collection can be by conventional methods

It an Electro-Mechanical. No sensor for these version.

1. To be strapped on the tree individually. Likewise latex collection and machine cleansing need manual job.

2. Sucking latex on the container is easier job but not pratical on huge plantation.

3. Machine cleansing and bark preparation need manually preparation and on each rubber trees.

4. Need power source and does not need diesel run or non-fuel powered/solar gen set

5. Tapping only need a few minute once in a huge areas. Latex collection after 2-4 hours after latex drip

6. Rubber trees tapping still need manual job at machine & trees preparation and maintanance unless just a few trees around

why the solar energy does not need for this machine?

Something like this?

Or a little more subtle?

More subtle, I think they wanted to have a tree when they were done!

I can help model it up.. but have no experience with rubber trees and their environment.

Dear Sub,

I too are trying hard to design a rubber tapping machine. I congratulate on your effort to solve a probem of which the industry suffers. Let's share ideas.

1. The thickness of the bark[Phloem in the trade] removed should be1.25mm. thinner will not open the latex vessels as about this depth, the lates is coagulated. thicker will waste the tree.

2. Between the the bark[phloem] and the trunk[xylem] is a thin skin-like film called vascular cambium, whic develops into phloem and xylem and it should not be touch during tapping.

3. Latex vessels are very clowe to this vascular cambium.

Thanks dear Sub,

Yours, M. Hassen Jiffry, techinventions@myway.com, Sri Lanka.

Dear Juby,

I too looking for some machine... but not fully automated but semi automatic so that any layman can do it. Got some idea with spring and rail mechanism. keep in touch with me on 09880237464.

If the process of collection can also be automated, such that the cup tilts itself when full, the rubber milk be able to flow thru chanelized flowing either into drums or into a tank which can operate as input for rubber sheet making process. What say?

Hi Juby,

I would like to join you in this area of common interest.

We probably need to pool some engineering resources.

Identify current research activities in this area.

Hello,

I am also interested in developing a Rubber tapping machine, because of the scarcity of expert rubber tappers. I also interested in finding reasons of different type of diseases infecting rubber trees..

Hello Juby

What're you planning to implement? Is it just an automated Rubber Tapping device or much more? Really I too interested in this topic! If we share common requirements ,of course we'll go ahead.

1.The device need to be set to the angle proposed for bark striping before its operation.

2.There should be a remote control over it. and much more...we'll continue if you're interested.

i have a clear idea in this regard. the hint is the machine should be simple and very cost effective so that it can be fixed on each tree and no need to carry around. I can make a proto type also. interested researchers and developers can contact me.

My colleague and I also have interesting and some idea on this machine. We are mechanical engineer in China. We have interesting to cooperate with anyone of you.

If you have interesting, let's discuss more detail by E mail.

Guys,

As I said I have finally made the prototype. Its not automatic but It is very convenient and even beginners can also operate with accuracy with out touching the thin layer of the trunk. It is very fast that within 30 seconds you can finish tapping the tree. In trial running there is a small correction needed in the mechanism to go to the next level. If any mechanical engineers are there please help me in fixing this error I can give more details if contact me on my e mail cyrilkt@yahoo.co.in
