Had this ever happened to you?

04/04/2009 6:57 AM

I have XP pro and this annoying message below has been cropping up for the last couple of months (since I had to un-install McAfee AntiVirus and replaced it with Avast) whenever I click on windows update.

"[Error number: 0x80072F8F]

Your computer's date and time appear to be out of sync with an update certificate. To fix this:

1. In Control Panel, open Date and Time Properties.
2. Ensure that the date and time are correct."

Have you any remedy for it - I mean a good one? (I tried to set the date but it doesn't seem to help.)

Further - what causes the DVD player breaking the picture during play instead of playing it smooth?

I searched the error number and got this:

http://www.petri.co.il/forums/archive/index.php/t-200.html

pclinc23rd December 2003, 11:49Oh yes... LOL the famous IE error. Just Right click IE on your desktop And del all the files, links, History. Be sure to clean out the Prefetch folder In Windows. To see it, just unhide the folders.. BTW, clean out the hidden Temp Folder. Start, Run, %TEMP%. Edit select all. Shift ket and del. Lifes Good. Run disk cleanup after a reboot. You should be good for the go.

But some times Win update is down too. Happy Hoildays ENJOY.

If it doesn't help, try the rest of the hits. I used Yahoo! Search.

regards,

Vulcan

Hi Isti80,

fortunately, Windows has some built-in "wisdom" you can tap on. it's called the F1 key. search for the meaning of the error message there.

otherwise, get it directly from the horse's mouth -> Micro$oft! the link will take you directly to the pages that discuss / explain this error.

when I saw the date/time error, my instinct tells me it might have something to do also with your CMOS battery. it might already be spent. it won't hurt to check that out as well.

HTH!

Slow down think about what is happening and be careful.

First suggestion is system restore. I have seen that message before and if you continue in the MS advisement of the issue a manual fix is described and I recall it worked.

Check device manager for warning signs possible graphic driver troubles.

Run search for Mcafee and remove any remaining. Check in program files for Mcafee and delete.

Go to Internet Options and clean cache, temps, cookies, history, etc., etc...

Go to advanced system settings and on the advanced tab select performance, select no page file.

Go to system restore and reduce files size to 766MB.

Go to my computer, right click each hard drive and select disk clean up, check all the boxes, click yes and okay for each.

Defragment, reboot. Write back

I got a trojan and it changed the date so avast wouldn't update. I used atomic clock and pinged so the date and time updated. I had to use a trojan remover to delete. It was self replicating so I had to find where it came from I then used my firewall to block block IE explorer update as it came in at the same time everyday. Spybot would stop the update but it came so fast I had to shut down and reboot. Run virus scan and trojan remover. Once I blocked the update with the firewall I was able to get rid of it.

1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

2. Once the list populates, check the "Show Updates" box at the top right.

The right-hand column in the list of installed programs will show the install date for each Windows update. The error message you got usually means that one or more of the updates has an install date later than your system clock. The most common cause is that someone opened the system clock (double-clicked on the time at the end of the taskbar) and looked for a future date, then hit OK instead of cancel to close the window.

For a permanent fix, you will need to uninstall that update, ensure your system clock is accurate, then reinstall the update.

Hi guys,

Thanx 4all your comments but I recently found out this problem boiled down to one thing, and I only realised it the other week when it prompt me to install 'Genuine Advantage Notification'.

After installing 'Genuine Advantage Notification' that I badly needed an update and there's no further problems since.

It appears Microsoft wants to periodically follow up whether your windows is genuine or not (it's like big brother's watching you). The funny part is that Microsoft already has my download record of updates and windows was installed by the manufacturer. But they seem to wanna double check and make sure your machine is also what you've started out with or something.

Any idea?

Genuine Advantage, yuck, I run Office 2003 on all of my computers right now, desktop and laptop. So recently, one that has the licensed program installed for about 4 years started showing the prompt about not being a legitimate copy. I have heard of this before. And now, a new laptop I bought from Tiger Direct with Vista Business installed, registered and validated, asking to be validated again.

I suspect it is hidden in MS security downloads to try and force us to by Windows 7 and Office 2010. Any thoughts on this one???

I would recommend to follow their instruction until they do not ask you to pay because then if I were you I would start to kick the stink. Of course if it is a business related software they always try to lay some charges as every little on the top end adds up globally.

Of course we should leave the poor b......alone as one day the empire might crumble perhaps in more than one way, as I gather and according to the latest, should google swing into full scale action also.

Meanwhile he needs every penny!

I bought the Vista machine for My Grandson to use while he is visiting, because it was pretty cheap.

I detest the intrusion with Office, I might try and validate the Vista again, but since I am pretty adept at Open Office, I would go that way for any non business machines I use.

I have downloaded MS Office viewers only for My Grandson and that is OK for him.

Someday, I hope to become comfortable with Linux or a similar OS, to entirely free Myself from MS intrusion.

One thing I forgot to mention, the Office MS Advantage thingy does not appear all of the time, but at least 90% of the time.
