Determining Tyrannosaurus rex gender

06/03/2005 10:18 AM

Following up on our previous story on "fleshy" T-rex, researchers at North Carolina State University believe they have found a way to determine the sex of dinosaurs. By extracting medullary bone from leg bones, a calcium rich layer in bony material that is present only during the egg-laying cycle, they were able to determine that a particular Tyrannosaurus rex was female. This discovery is also interesting because medullary bone has never previously been reported in any other class of animal than birds; thereby solidifying the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds.

So do platypuses (plural of platypus, I had to look it up.) and spiny anteaters also have this layer of calcium in their bones?
